I've noticed the stoppage time has been extreme. Are they running a stop watch to catch every second the ball isn't in play now? 7 minutes seems like the new average.

Apparently it's a new directive so any lost time and time wasting is added on. If you're winning the match it's a bad thing and you're screaming at the ref to blow the whistle already. If you're losing the match it's the best rule change in history
. The England match the other day, the Iranian keeper took a bad knock to the head and there was a lot of stoppage time added on because of that. Iirc it was about 14 minutes
A possible alternative to watching the World Cup 2022:
Welsh hearts broken in the last 2 minutes of stoppage time
. They'll need a result against England in the final game, now. Should make it interesting

I just had a mini heart attack when I saw that tonight's 3-1 drubbing of the USA wasn't listed for 7pm on the Beeb.
It never occurred to me it might be on ITV (which is where I found it).
I think this will be only the second soccer match I will have watched in my life
