I have two Ferdowns and I think, hands down, they are the best of the English pipes and that includes my Dunhill.

I have a 3 Star Reo that is an amazing pipe. I'll have to snap a pic as I don't think I've ever taken a good one of it.
When it comes to English pipes, I think Ferndowns are top of the line. Dunhills get all the glory but for the price, you can not beat a Ferndown. I hope to add a few more to the collection in the future.

The only sure-fire way to date that Ferndown would be to contact them. Les may know thru the stamping on what era it was made. That nomenclature is unique and unlike current-day Ferndowns (or even Les Woods. I love that shape, size and stem, what a beauty.
From Pipepedia:

Due to diffuse world wide rights to certain names he sold his earlier pipes as "Ellwood", "Les Wood" or "L. Wood". The average of presently 1500 - 2000 pipes a year is sold as "Ferndown" - named for the mansion he lives in - in the UK and US, but as "L. Wood" pipes in Germany.
The nomenclature on Bubbleheads pipe is none of the above.

This Ferndown was my first "expensive" pipe. I think I paid $270.00 for it in the early 90's. It has always been a wonderful smoker. It usually stays in my safe, but I think I'll keep it out for a while now and enjoy it again. Glad this thread came up.

Some nice additions, I love their silver-spigots.
@maxpeters - wow, a 1 dot, that would be terrific. I never see them in that size these days.

Nice pipes guys. I love Ferndowns rustication. It so craggy. I don't have one yet, but I will. Rustic/cumberland stem.

@ssjones,very clever although I like seeing those high ranking guys. Getting a chance tp speak with American military movers and shakers is pretty cool.

@pipebaum81: Earlier this year, while working near Ft. Belvoir, I met a Three Star General (Milley?). He had all three Special Forces tabs (my brother was a Ranger and told me the title, I forgot). As the of a SGM, I met plenty of Colonels and a few One Stars as a kid, but I had never met a 3 Star to that point. He was pretty personable, but looked like he could chew my head off and spit out the teeth.....
