I generally use a match for the first light on my pipe. For subsequent re-lights, I usually use my Zippo with a pipe insert incidentally let me bring to mind the zippo Premium fuel, as it is low odor compared to the regular Zippo fuel. The disadvantage of a butane lighter is that it burns approximately 1000°C higher than a conventional lighter, and that runs the risk of scorching the wood, as well as destroying flavor components of the tobacco. That said, I have several nice butane lighters, including the IM Corona Old Boy, and confess that I enjoy their convenience. However I also have a Zippo, a Nimrod Commander, and it Nimrod Sportsman. Love them all. You smoke a pipe for over 50 years, and you pick up a few toys along the way. :)

My wife got a Zippo pipe lighter for Valentines Day, I love it. I didn't even know they made a pipe lighter till she spotted it in the store!

I smoke cigarettes as a 'top-up' for nicotine during the day and always feel cheap if I don't have a real lighter with me. I have a few and find the chrome finish less secure in the hand than the brass. I wonder whether anyone can make an informed statement about Zippo quality over the years? It would be nice to know they've kept it up. My favourite shape is the 1935 model. It fits my hand perfectly.

Mine is not a month old and it looks to be of the same quality as the one I owned 20 years ago.
Can't say that about many things these days!

Peterson and Zippo got together awhile back and put out a pipe and lighter set. The Pete had a nickel band that said Zippo and the lighter is just gorgeous with Peterson emblazoned on it. It had the pipe insert of course. I also recently got one from my buddy. HIs dad passed and we were close too so he offered me something of his. I picked his zippo as he was a smoker too. It says Chief Willis engraved. HIs dad was a CMSgt. in the air force. Here is a pic of my two Zippos.

Zippo reformulated their lighter fluid probably 6 or more years ago. Unless you have a pre-reformulation can you should not experience what once had been a ‘naptha’ smell / odor.
The opening and closing of a Zippo lighter is one of the most recognizable sounds (at least for older folks). Put someone in the dark and open and close a Zippo. 99 out of a 100 people will immediately identify it as a Zippo lighter.

I have my great grandfather's (who was the police commissioner of Saint Paul, Minnesota during the prohibition) Zippo, I don't think he ever used it. After he passed, my mom and her siblings were cleaning out his condo and sorting what to toss, what to keep. Apparently they were going to toss his Zippo, which I snatched quickly. It was dated to somewhere between 1937-1941. I haven't converted it to a pipe insert yet, but I do have a Zippo pipe lighter, I love it. Although, I would like to find a fluid that has less of that "taste".

I had an uncle who was part owner of a Mack Truck dealership in Columbia, SC. He used to give my dad Zippo lighters with the Mack bulldog on them. I don't know what my mother did with those, they have both passed now. Wish I had those.
