Often it seems that my most beautiful pipe is the one I am smoking at the moment. Even the plain Janes blossom, on a good day.

Ouch! That's the first time I've heard of that happening. Was it substantial? I've always wanted a beautiful horn like that.

Pretty standard on international shipments. It's up to the individual shipping company (Fedex, etc) to report the item and it's value. Some report less frequently than others. You can look up the duty rate but it's not terrible. I believe I paid somewhere around 3% on my last shipment from Al Pascia...might be wrong though.

There's no clear cut winner because:
A. The most beautiful pipe is the one that is delivering a beautiful smoke at the moment.
and:
B. I own very different kinds of pipes and appreciate them on their own terms.
This long Canadian by Scottie Piersel is stunning:

as is this Paul Tatum volcano:

but they're very different than this Preben Holm carved Ben Wade

and they're certainly different than a traditional English pipe:

and nothing like my Castello Occhio di Pernice

not to forget the somewhat strange and wonderful

How could I just pick one.

WOW, this question is a tough one.
My first choice would have to be my Satou Churchwarden.

I have never had a pipe that I just stare at and get giddy like this one. It is beautiful to my eye and just makes me smile.
A close second would be my Jess Chonowitsch saddle billiard. Again, a pipe that just puts a grin on my face.

Peck- No Cannoy elephants foot? I think that one is absolutely stunning!
Nate- The tax bill was maybe 7%? Then again you don't have to pay the 19% VAT. You may inquire about other shipping options, not sure what they offer.

I like the Jess Chonowitsch a lot.
My favorite - at least today - is my Scott Thile bulldog

Mine is an Arley Curtz Volcano that I traded a Ser Jacopo Hobbit pipe for. I will try to round up a picture when I get home. I still haven't smoked it yet - it is even in a glass case for display lol. I probably never will smoke it. The guy I traded it for told me it is the only Curtz Volcano he has ever seen.
