I have a Peterson that was one of my first pipes that took forever to break in, but it is a top performer now. I also have a stanwell that has always done very well. There are several others, and with careful selection in my experience most pipes can be very good performers. One does not need to be a person of means to have an absolutely top shelf experience in this hobby.

That said, for this hobby most of my collection were artisan pipes and artisan/factory pipes made by companies like Ardor. Most of those are, and were, over the $100 mark.

All of the 6 Petersons I own cost less than $100 except for one, a gift, which I'm sure cost more because of the sterling silver on the shank. Of course I purchased them during a previous century.
I recollect my sole remaining Savinelli circa 1977 cost maybe $75, purchased to celebrate my first lecturing gig.

This is currently my best pipe / tobacco combination. Perfect smoking characteristics and pleasure every time. I've only recently found it - this is the first tin.

Aldo Velani. Sterling silver band.
Waaay under $100.
One of many great smokers under $60, and expect that several of my pipes I've not gotten to yet will be fantastic as well.

My pear wood pipe I got for Christmas is one of my favorites.

Anyway, for only $35 postpaid from Serbia you can buy one, that looks exactly like that pear wood pipe, only it was 55 years ahead of it’s time. Mmm, mmm, delicious.

Stanwell Vario 29 (billiard).
Medico back-of-the-box special offer pipe (1/4 bent sandblast egg).
Besides cobs, the only other pipes I bought new were a Barling Londoner Dublin and a Savanelli Punto Oro Zulu way back in the '80s, both of which I still have; they were both under $100, but that was a long time ago. The Sav is my favorite.

My best pipe, by far! The ubiquitous Savinelli take on an author, the 320 roma with lucite stem:
