Tonight I ordered a pizza from a nearby pizzeria. The actual ordering went smoothly enough. The problem was paying for it.

When asked for the expiration date on my card I said, "November 2026".

After a pause, the guy taking my order said, "Can you repeat that?"

"November 2026."

Another long pause.

"I'm sorry, can you repeat that again?"

"November 2026"

An even longer pause

"Could you give me the numbers, please?"

We are doomed.

sounds like the kind of brain fry that type of job gives you. Been on both ends of that scene.

The restaurants and the government only hire the best. Recently, after a receptionist asked me my name for the third time in a 45 second conversation, I replied "The same as it was the previous two times you asked me." Blank look for about 5 seconds while she processed my response and then the stuttering began.

Don't worry. With the growing postgraduate degree inflation and AI driven automation, in a few years the guy taking you pizza order will have a PhD in quantum mechanics and will be asking for the expiration date in scientific notation.

The other thing no one realizes is that idiots are everywhere and having issues with customers that should have read the number because they think October is the third month and say that their expiration date is October 2025 instead of march or 03/25 is something that happens way more then you'd feel comfortable knowing.
I'll put it this way no one who has worked with the public in a place like that is shocked by the depths of human moronicy.

Got a counter-person fired the other day because of her lack of customer service ability. The owner has always prided herself on her personnel. She was thankful to hear the complaint and took action immediately. I deplore poor customer service and feel it a duty to report to the owner, not the manager/supervisor, the owner. When possible

There is a gland in the back of the brain attached to and behind the Medulla, that controls analytical reasoning and logical thinking. There are four secular studies that found it only develops if a child learns either drawing art or writing in script. Do you understand now why they removed learning handwriting in the schools ??? Its was all planned. Fr. Schall the Head of the Theology department at Georgetown University would not allow any cell phones or computers in his classroom. He required every student to buy a pen and a notebook and take all notes in script because of these studies - 2 American, 1 British and 1 Japanese. He wrote several papers on it as well. Chances are the person you dealt with cannot write in script or draw. P.S. This is a pet peeve of mine as I write neatly with and use fountain pens.
P.S. I used to pay $21-23 for a large veggie pizza; it now costs $33.00.

Lord help us, the species is doomed. You can’t fix that kind of stupid. Hopefully the pizza was good, but you have to wonder if the kitchen crew was just as dingy … nope not gonna think that. The pizza chef can count to twelve, he can, I know he can, please god let him be able to count to twelve and know which month is which!!!

It was mandatory to study handwriting and calligraphy back in Korea. And when I came to America, script was still being taught. My handwriting is not the fault of any educational instructions. I'm just not good with it. If I pay attention, handwriting isn't bad. But who's got the time?

12? That depends on how many toppings he works with on daily basis. It might be few as 3 on average. "Pepperoni, sausage, extra cheese.. That's 3. Right Jose?"

And the fun is just beginning...

So-called "Covid Kids"---meaning children who reached the language absorption age when mask mandates hit, so didn't connect facial movement with sound. A brain wiring thing that there's no rewind button for. They'll be starting elementary school shortly.

And then there are Search Engine Kids who don't see the need to memorize or learn ANYTHING because the answer to any situation or problem can always be looked up instantly. The result? Intellectual activity that requires combinatorial knowledge such as analysis or (especially) synthesis will forever elude them. Again, brain development is a hardwired-in-response-to-the-environment thing that largely stops at age twenty or so... and no rewind button.

Don't forget the Digital Kids in the social sense... the ones whose brains developed almost exclusively surrounded by smart phone screens, video games, texting, Zoom-type conversation, live streams, and so forth. They are hopelessly bad communicators when placed in a human setting. As in, neurotic, shy, anxious, easily intimidated, retiring, and constantly seeking escape. Outside of their electronic bubble they are largely useless.

I could go on, but you get the idea...

According to the most recent stats I've seen, over 50% of American adults read at a level below that of the sixth grade.

And yeah, I know, take stats with a big grain of salt...but personally I don't doubt it. And I'm sure sixth grade level ain't what it used to be.

Did I just say ain't?

It is surely a damning portrayal of youth in America. Sometimes you feel like you are talking to an alien from god knows where. I guess you would have been better off saying "11 2026" but that shouldn't matter.
