I don’t know why most folks aren’t curious enough to discover Pre 54 Marxman pipes but Telescopes might make his heirs so rich hoarding up unsmoked examples they might head down the road to dissolute and decadent ruin from their gains, for which they will neither spin nor weave to acquire.

My heirs will not be so spoiled and pampered.:)

Marx knew, just had to know, that if his customers removed the wax coating within a few dozen smokes his product would darken.

Maybe a couple dozen smokes?

Marxman pipes quickly take a cake but it’s soft, and can be completely removed and the brown briar in the bowl restored.

Bob Marx was a mortal man and not a sorcerer. Whatever he did could have been duplicated then and still could be, today.

He didn’t brag about it, but he used Algerian briar. If it was oil cured the oil had to be clear as water. They color so quickly a lot of the original buyers must have smoked them up and bought more, and their heirs wouldn’t treasure the almost black pipes left behind.

But he made a lot of the best smoking pipes ever possible to make.

Hmmmm. I have four Marxman pipes I regularly smoke, a 400, a Mel-O, a Jumbo Benchmade, and a Royal that was most likely supposed to have been a 400.

They all smoke well.

But… not better than any of my

6 Dunhill pipes,
5 Italian made pipes which include a Kristiansen, Il Ceppo, Castello, Radice Rind, and Gepetto,

or for that matter my Danish pipes which include various Stanwells, Knutes, and Nordings.

One thing is for sure, not only do each of the above pipes smoke as well or if not better, THEY ALL LOOK IMMEASURABLY BETTER AND MORE BEAUTIFUL.

My collection of Grabows, Pipe Makers, Lees, and yes even Marxmans are great working man pipes. They stand on their own merits quite well.

But so does a 53 Flatboard Ford.

Pre 54 Marxman makes up most of my pipes and they smoke really well. Part of the enjoyment could be because I fixed em up but who knows.
They do smoke really well indeed. I enjoy older pipes partially because of my love of history and historical objects. And I agree with Van in that Marxman pipes seem to have an actual noticeable impact on the taste of pipe tobacco. I reach for them often, more than my Grabows, Lees, and Pipe Makers. That says something to me. They’re the ugly girl who always seems to come through when you need a real friend.

I love the look of them. Especially the Jumbos that are rough carved. I'm gonna make a pipe soon and I think I am going to carve it the same as a tribute 🤣

Check out the Cowan pipes on Reborn pipes. Cowan was one of Marx’s most famous carvers. Look at what he did when he got out on his own. They are beautiful takes on the Marxman look while having a look of their own.

No other brand of briar pipe colors so quickly and so dark as my Marxmans:

I clean every pipe I get with Everclear.

Marx’s customers had coal black pipes in a month if that was the only pipe they smoked.

They were made from the best kind of ancient Algerian briar that was good to smoke.

Bob Marx knew a bunch of old men at WDC and he listened to them about briar,

They knew a way to tell what the good smoking briar was.

It was not suitable at all for classically beautiful fancy pipes.

But it’s perfect for rugged outdoor men of action.:)

Did you run this by Albert Dunhill before you made that statement? I guess I better toss out my 6 Dunhill pipes ALL made with Algerian Briar.
It wasn’t the same Algerian Marx used. It couldn’t have been unless it was blasted.

A typical smooth Marx pipe noticeably colors all over with each smoke. They’ll get a deep, dark reddish black brown very quickly,,,,:just the same shade as a good Hermann Oak leather saddle that has neatsfoot oil applied and gets well broken in.

If you ever own one Hermann Oak saddle you’ll never want another kind unless it’s a show saddle which cannot be made of it, because it gets too dark.

My wife and I when we were younger were on saddle horses swimming rivers and climbing rocky hillsides where no other saddles were even considered except custom made Hermann Oak.

Not that it’s any safer.

It would be like killing yourself on a Japanese Harley clone intstead of a Hog.:)
