As a newer member, I've lurked here and other forums for a long time, mostly to see the pipes. Learn about different makers and the nomenclatures to research what I'm buying as best as I could. The pictures are the best thing to learn from. So for me it's not a like or dislike photos thing. But I appreciate the knowledge and the eye candy is just a bonus.

I post pictures for the following reasons (a) every pipe I own looks identical and the only way to see the difference in shape and coloring is to post a picture (b) people have told me they like seeing pictures of my ancient pipes so if practical I oblige. I like seeing everyone else's pipes since I tend to be fascinated by the grains and patterns which add so much to the narrative of what they are smoking. It is the difference from saying "I am smoking Gallopers Owl Turds in my clay pipe" verses "Here is a picture of my Dunhill wiz bang super inner tube 1946 briar and I am enjoying at bowl 20 year old aged Clan". Pictures add some much to the narrative and whoever thought it up as a concept was a genius. Its the same as buying books with pictures in!

I think that no matter what hobby it is, we tend to like to see pictures in the genre. I love seeing a picture... however, I hate it when people will post the pictures posted by the vendors. SPc has excellent pictures that help in a shopping/ illustrative way, but are rather boring. Show me the pipe sitting on a table with some empty mugs, a few tins, and a half eaten candy bar, ha ha. Cameras on iPhones are better than most digital cameras.

Heck, but even if your a camera moron, just post the pics. We all love seeing a new pipe... or an old one.

I love to see pipe pictures. It's reassuring to know that other collectors smoke inexpensive pipes as well as artisans.
I have never owned a Dunhill, but I can't imagine that it would smoke so much better than the mid-priced specimens that I have so as to justify itself.
In addition, my concept of beauty is based in the intrinsic utility of an object, and looking at a wide range of well used pipes fits with that concept.

After owning over 100 pipes, I now have 5. Three I smoke. And a cob is in my truck. So, four...if I did the math right.

I've never paid over 250 bucks for a pipe and never will. Rare tobacco is another story. :)

And after years being on different pipe forums I have no real interest to post pictures or see pics of other pipes. I tend to think I've seen them all. A pipe is a pipe is a pipe. I guess I just burned out on the pic-posting stuff.

and it's pg pornographic. Sometimes you enjoy looking at something because you know what kind of fun you could have with it, even if you'll never get the chance. P.s. I also love pics of Bass Guitars.
I don't know if I'd go so far as to call it pornographic, but I do think there is an element of voyeurism in ogling another person's pipe. It is certainly enjoyable, but a strange kind of enjoyment.

Do you just have one picture of each pipe? Are these all the pics that the pipemakers took? I've always wondered about this in the WAYS thread. Some of these pics have been repeatedly posted since I've been on this forum.

Why not at least every now and then take a picture to show us how they are holding up? Obviously, they don't have to be professional pictures. Jiminks usually just takes a pic on a towel and posts them.
