The most I spent on a pen was about $350 for a top of the line one; I can't actually see spending that much on a pipe because it is a much simpler thing, but routinely find pipes between $65 and $265 that I would be glad to own. Above that is for people who want to be collectors. I am glad we have people wealthy enough to do stuff like that as it helps the market below them. What I dislike is people overspending on the lower end as that raises costs across the board.

^^^ Where are you currently having lunch?
ROFL - that is great. Nice one.
I have pipes that retail from $10 to $400. If a pipe seems "worth" it to me then I would buy it. Worth is in quotes because it is different from individual to individual.

You should feel guilty if you spend more than anyone else. That makes us all feel insufficient. Better if all pipes cost the same, and worked exactly the same, so that no one would be above anyone else.

The amount is relative. We all have different incomes and expenses. A good way to judge might be what percentage of a weekly income have you spent or willing to spend on a pipe. For me it would be 1/8 of my weekly income. I know I'm a little on the tight-wad side generally but another way to look at it is how many times a month does one spend that percentage. I go thru spells on that one. In comparison I spend another 1/8 on tobacco per month.

Most I've spent is 65$ on a brand new Peterson that is worth around 250$. I wouldn't spend more than 100$ on a pipe, and I still haven't spent close to that. The most I've spent other than the 65$ was 25$ on an estate meershaum.

Few months ago I was chatting with some male colleagues while showing them the new Zippo I have just received. Then a female coworker entered the room, saw the lighter and asked the price of it, I said $30 and she was shocked, she was like "Doesn't a lighter cost a dollar or something?". A lighter. She called one piece of my collection just a lighter. I could not even tell her that a 1937 Zippo would cost around $2000. We just did not want to call an ambulance. From her point of view it is a lighter, from mine it is Zippo. However a diamond is not a stone, it is diamond all the time. Society accepts it as a diamond even though I call it a stone.

I have to accept that I was very surprised when I started reading posts in this thread. I thought most of you guys were spending a lot on pipes. Then, who is buying those expensive pipes? They are always sold out.

My question is, could you justify the purchase of a $4000 pipe even if your fiance allowed it? :)

Rich people who don't care to spend time on internet forums.

Warren, while I see what you're trying to accomplish, it's a really bad idea. Why not take two for 500k? That seems far more more reasonable, but as you said... refining.

If I spent $4000 on a pipe. I'll end up wishing I'd saved it to pay for my divorce.

Yesterday, I saw two pipes that attracted me, Mr Brog's new hexagon pipe and one of the olivewood pipes that someone else showed. Either could be obtained for around $50. I am resisting, simply because I am not planning to buy a pipe at this point. At the next pipe show, I will spend a certain amount. The cost of the pipe is not the determining factor. It is how and when I plan on spending money.

If I had the means, I would be more than happy to pay $10,000 for a pipe, but it would have to do dishes and pleasure me. Something I really like about this forum is the guy (Peck?) who was having a pipe with meteorite made. That is awesome! Hopefully, I'll get to see the finished product on these pages. I can't afford something like that and won't for the immediate future. I strive to support art and creativity and admire people with the talent to take an ordinary object or concept and make it strangely beautiful. Artists need benefactors and the fact this gentleman is commissioning an unusual piece is great. I don't care how others spend money in general. I may never buy a new pipe other than the two cobs I have. Fact is, I love antiques and have several non-pipe pieces that are far superior to stuff in stores today. With a lot of knowledge and twenty bucks I can usually meet my needs and then some. The most I have spent on a pipe so far is $23.24(including shipping)for a BBB Own Make Thorneycroft with the brass BBB on the stem. In the new year I will spend the least amount possible to get high quality, good smoking pipes. That's how I get my kicks. But make no mistake, If I had the money I would get a custom briar bowl with gold and silver inlay, white and yellow diamonds on the solid silver and gold marbled stem and a rope to hang it around my neck woven from the nether hairs of a thousand virgins. The most I would spend is however much THAT costs ! 8O

This raises another interesting question: How much would one be willing to spend on a [50 gram] tin of their favorite out-of-production or cellared blend(s)?

Maybe 50$, and I'm in Canada, so it would be close to the retail price. I do regret not buying this 2 tin lot on ebay I found, a cutty top sealed Balkan Sobranie, and a 20 year old tin of escudo for 125$ at a buy it now price. There was no shipping out of the US but after I realized I could of had it shipped to 4noggins or to pipestud and sold it on consignment for probably 400$ easily.

$4k? Sure, if I was in a position where $4k was easily disposable income I would spend $4k on any number of things that I wanted... But I'm not, so spending money on pipes is lower on my priority list than other things, none of my pipes have been over $120 and most are estates so much much lower than that.

"For the record, Nate is the meteorite guy. I wouldn't know where to put metoerite on my cobs."
My mistake. The Microphone pipe was awesome as well and is also a great example of artistry in this community.
