MSO489 derives from the USS Gallant, MSO 489 -- minesweeper oceangoing -- on which I served '69-'70, off the DMZ of Vietnam, as a radioman, a now defunct rating. The Navy boot camp in San Diego where I trained closed long ago. The minesweeper's homeport of Long Beach is now a commercial port mostly for trade with China. Midway Island, where I also served, and which was a pristine nature preserve, is now beset by plastic waste and has no Naval station. USS Gallant was featured on CBS television at the outset of the first Gulf War, interviewing crew members about the coming conflict. In the nineties it was sold to the Taiwan navy and re-named. The ship appeared in the movie "Easy Come, Easy Go," with Elvis Presley long before I ever saw it. The hull was made round-bottomed entirely of Washington Spruce.

I don’t know if you’ve seen this site before, but they have quite a bit of technical info about the ship, as well as images of old documents, etc.

I like ale, so, "ale-hood", or "olkofri" in Old Icelandic. It's from Ölkofra þáttr.

Avatar is taken from one of the many games I've played. I was gonna Photoshop a briar pipe in initially, but decided to go with a lowly cob as a reference to the name of said game. The bear in that game also shares a name with me.

I was strangely scared of Gene Wilder because of this movie. Something about him just freaked me out:)

Scottish Borders
My name is from the area of Scotland where my more modern ancestors settled, the Ettrick valley in the Scottish Borders where we’ve been since the 16th century. Our DNA includes Pict which means we were here before the Scots came over from Ireland.
The picture is me smoking my late fathers Peterson as I spent my last night in my childhood home.
Happy smokes

My username is a nickname from high school based on having Amish-lengthed mutton chops and disposition. 30ish years later and I am still known as Amish to a lot of people.

The avatar is my logo, created in high school and based on my nickname.

Skatutakee, is also a Greek pejorative that translates roughly to "little shit." Skatouli is the more commonly used form.
Just sayin'.
But, no offence, I hold you in much higher regard than that.
