For you younger guys who only Know Bob Newhart from his TV shows, go google some of his stand up. He was hilarious, and his comedy was very cerebral, yet delivered in a very approachable way. Funny stuff.
AND HIS TV SHOWS SUCKED SO MANY BALLSACKS IT'S UNREAL

My wife does stand up occasionally, and I love working with her to develop her routines. Every joke has a "butt" that receives the condemnation of the laughs. Easy jokes, make fun of someone else. Better jokes make fun of ideas, but the ones we try to write always have to center on the speaker as the "butt" of the jokes. Steve Martin was a genius at being able to make fun of the whole world by turning the jokes on himself.
So you have somehow gotten your wife in on a routine where the two of you sit down and make fun of her, even writing it down. That is fucking genius.
I love to make fun of my wife, but it's a hazardous endeavour and doesn't always end well.

Actually, she just pretends to be me, and people laugh. But, people don't laugh as much when I do it. I guess she is just better at it than me. puffy

Good list there! I’d add Jim Jeffries and I don’t care what people think of him, I still love Louis CK... there is a whole list though, I could go on and on, I just don’t have the time.

Oh and let’s not forget The Tiger King, the best accidental comedy ever’
Agree completely. I forgot about Jeffries and I'll add Bill Burr. I saw them on (I think) Jeffries' show sitting and talking. Caustic, abrasive, and hilarious.
Louise CK was (is) one of the best. His career didn't need to be ruined over that.
I mean... when I went to the doc last time he had a hot female doctor filling in. She told me I had to stop masturbating. I said, "Why?!.
She said, "Because I'm trying to examine you."

So your better half is also better at your half? I guess that's what they refer to as 'marrying up'!

I like a lot of the suggestions so far, but recently i rewatched through my box set of pink panthers and Peter Sellers gets me laughing so hard. I also really liked him in 'Being There'.

Dave Chappelle explaining why black hostages don't work, Ricky Gervais describing all the kings horses as being the worst possible option for putting humpty dumpty back together again....

Black Books is my go to 'every episode is funny' tv.

If any of you enjoy unscripted comedy, you should watch “An Idiot Abroad,” where Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant send Karl Pilkington, their well-intentioned but culturally challenged friend, abroad to various countries. It’s both interesting and hilarious. I think there were two seasons, if I remember correctly.

BBC Radio 4 Extra (available on their website via 'sounds' has reruns of lots of classic programmes including comedy shows. If interested after clicking sounds you need to click on schedule then Radio 4 Extra and it gives the last week or so schedule - all the programmes/episodes listed are available usually along with another 3 or 4 episodes.

Comedy offerings usually include classics from the 50s, 60s and 70s like The Goon Show, Hancock's Half Hour, I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again, The Navy Lark, Round the Horne plus more recent stuff.

Nice touch is that unlike their tv shows this is available world wide.

Several of the names mentioned in earlier posts were famous for their radio shows before they were on TV.

I enjoy the classics; Charlie Chaplin, the Three Stooges, Jackie Gleason, Mel Brooks, Monty Python just to name a few. Then standup...Richard Pryor, Carlin, Red Foxx, Bill Burr. There’s plenty more, but these come to the top of my head.

Hahaha! That’s awesome! And yes! Bill Burr! I knew I was forgetting someone important. I’m still catching up on the latest F is for Family. I think it just keeps getting better each season.

Anthony Jeselnik. He is a safe comedian so if you do not like some of the harsher edges of current comedians I recommend him. Gather the children type of guy.

Bill Burr is one of the greatest stand up comedians ever. Anthony Jeselnik is great as are Ricky Gervais, Russell Brand, Eddie Izzard and Stuart Lee.
Some of my favourite comedy shows are The Larry Sanders Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development, The Office (UK original), Peep Show, The League Of Gentlemen, I'm Alan Partridge and Fawlty Towers.
Definitely another great list that I agree with!

I’m a huge fan of Mitchell & Webb!

All the above save recent Gervais, plus: Blackadder! A Fish Called Wanda; Being There; Airplane!; Blazing Saddles (the first time it showed, but not now); Episodes; Corner Gas; anything with Martin Clunes.

Most of the stand up already mentioned, with a few exceptions. The guy with the puppets Mike Birbiglia), and It is a very far cry from a typical puppet show. Ray Romano; John Mulaney; George Lopez.

There was Jack Paar a long time ago, plus Carson and early Lettermen. Leno had good writers.

I'll often listen to stand up on the telly as I try to fall asleep, as I don't really have to watch every move.

I know I've left out a bunch.

Enjoy!
