First off, I'm really new to pipe smoking and it looks like I have started at a weird time with the news of Sutliff being sold and a lot of their products getting ready to be discontinued. I'm wanting to buy up some tobacco for storage. With my inexperience with different types of tobacco, what Sutliff products would you guys recommend for bulk buying? I have only tried a few different tobaccos, and tend to lean more towards aromatics right now. With Sutliff, there are so many choices, that it's overwhelming trying to figure out what to buy. Thanks for your suggestions.

If you are referring to the blends that might be going away, I would honestly just focus on blends that aren't being discontinued right now. It will save you a lot of headache. Especially if you find a blend that you cant live without, and find out its never coming back. Buy a few 2oz samples and go from there! Just pick the ones that sound good to your ear.

Personally, I wouldn't bother. Try out things that are for the time being, known to be staying in production. If you find a bunch of Sutliff things you like that go away, you won't be able to get them right out of the gate.

Unless you just feel like you want to try things for fun, knowing it may be a one and done deal, then go a little wild and diversify.

Aromatics (especially when bulk packaged) don't always (usually) age well, so panic buying several pounds of Mello Peach or Cherry Bon Bon today will actually just be wasting your money. Better to buy a few ounces and smoke them fresh while you can.

Your tastes will change over time anyway, you may find that you're not smoking as many aromatics in a year and you'll be glad you didn't sock away something that is only getting worse and losing its flavor the longer it sits.

There is no way of giving you an answer since tastes are very subjective. It’s unfortunate you’re getting into this hobby now with Sutliff and MB in doubt regarding their products. If anything, feel free to try some of their product out but if you are looking at building a cellar while trying out new blends you just might want to stick with C&D stuff or others like GH/SG.

Edit: huh looks like I just bame a Lifer. Nice.

I agree with the above advice. It might not be worth digging into their blends quite yet. Wait until the dust settles to see what blends survive the change (if any), then give them a try. As it stands, you can remain blissfully unaware of what you might be missing out on. That's a better spot to be than living in fear that a proclaimed favorite is going to go the way of the buffalo...

I would NOT do any bulk buying right now with your inexperienced palate. Give it a few months. Try things that are readily available and have historically proven to be "crowd pleasers". Let your palate develop. There will still be loads of blends available in 6-12-18 months down the road. You'll never miss what you didn't have and won't get stuck paying exorbitant prices because of some fear of missing "it". You will find plenty to enjoy and at "regular" prices. When you actually learn what you like, buy extra as prices WILL GO UP. But for now, it's still pretty darn inexpensive.

When McClelland closed, everyone was all, "don't panic, let's be prudent." Meanwhile I jumped in my truck and road across four states buying all of it from every B&M that I could find. By the time I got back, there were none in any store across the country. Now, all of these saps are whining about what they used to be able to get, and here I am smoking a fat bowl of British Woods.... Mmmmmmm.....

I remember that road trip. Didn't you buy almost 40 pounds of 5100?

I don’t know if I would buy a lot of a blend I’ve never tried. If you mean buying bulk in sample sizes I wouldn’t bother at this point, unless you see something you have to try. I’d wait it out and see what survives. With that being said, I would try Mixture 79 and War Horse(I think Sutliff makes War Horse) as they are fairly singular in style and you will probably know right away if you like them.

I started in 2021 and I still suffer from the fear of blends disappearing. I have a ridiculous amount of open mason jars and it does make me a little crazy. The good news is I have found enough blends I’ve liked and stocked up on. Enjoy the process!

What's hilarious is that a number of people, me included, knew they were closing months before they announced it. I wasn't thinking in terms of saleability, I just bought what I thought I'd probably smoke. So no 100 lbs of 27, 5100, 2015 etc. Rather, I bought 10 tins of this, a pound or two of that, and seven years later I still have most of it.

It just didn't occur to me that people would be willing to shell out 10 times what I paid for the stuff. It's probably my very frugal upbringing coloring my perception, but I see such decisions as frivolous and not a little stupid.

Harris was egging me on. He was telling me what the prices would be and such. I knew and still know that I have no interest in selling, but at least he predicted what the market would be. He might have been a creepy perv, but he knew what people would be willing to pay.
