madmurdoc - I almost posted that video last night. I had the pleasure of meeting Alex Chilton many years ago in Bloomington, Indiana. He was soft spoken, a little shy and very humble. I had no idea he wrote and sang that song at the time and we got to talking about soul. I remember telling him I hated white guys trying to imitate black performers, but held up "The Letter" as an example of clear influence without mimicry. I believed then as now, it is one of the best songs ever written. We both agreed Joe Cocker did a great version of that song and made it his own. Big Star has some very fine songwriting as well. He didn't look much older than in the video and this was mid nineties. RIP Alex Chilton.
