I don't often encounter another Kansas fan for whatever reason, but I don't think there was ever another rock band that was more talented. These guys were writing and performing stuff that most of the bands out there weren't capable of.
This live performance of Journey From Mariabronn is a good example imo. Especially the second half, beginning at about the 4 min mark.
