Years smoking, a pipe-
About 3 years at this point.
Do you combine your pipe smoking with other forms of tobacco consumption? Cigars, snuff, etc. if so, which form of consumption do you lean to -
Yessir! I'm a pack a day RYO cigarette smoker and have been for 24 years now. I'm hoping to eventually quit smoking cigarettes and just stick to the pipe, but it's darn difficult for sure!
What kind of pipe.. artisan, factory, or combination-
I'm a factory pipe kinda guy. I can appreciate the aesthetics of a handmade artisan pipe, but for me a pipe is mostly just a tool to smoke tobacco with. I like Falcon pipes the best by far, though I do smoke Missouri Meerschaum cobs and Dr Grabows quite often too.
Size of your pipe collection?-
14 pipes at the moment! Three Falcons and seven bowls (5 briar and 2 meerschaum) for them, five Country Gentleman cobs, a Dr. Grabow Royalton, a couple Savinelli 401 Churchwardens, a Morgan Bones Milan, a Rossi Piccolo, and an AKB Meerschaum.
Do you smoke your pipe indoors, outside or combination of both? -
Mostly outdoors, though I do occasionally smoke aromatics that the other members of my household enjoy the room notes of indoors.
Do you smoke your pipe in public-
Yes indeedy! I'm fairly sure there's no one in my neighborhood who doesn't know I smoke a pipe!
How often do you smoke your pipe? -
Two or three times a day most days.
Favorite place or setting for a good pipe smoke?-
I like to smoke while out on dog walks or taking a stroll around the neighborhood. Just quietly sitting out in nature on a cool late summer or early autumn day is my favorite time for a smoke though!
Challenges, you smoke facing
a pipe? i.e. tongue bite, etc.-
The biggest challenge for me has been finding tobacco that doesn't irritate my mouth or throat in one way or another. I haven't gotten tongue bite in years since I learned to smoke slowly and sip my pipes gently, but I do find that the acidity of the smoke from most Virginias tends to irritate the soft palate on the roof of my mouth and the abrasive harshness of most Burleys gives me a sore throat.
I have found a handful of blends that don't bother my mouth or throat and that I like the flavors of though! Five Brothers, Gawith Hoggarth Kendal Dark, Samuel Gawith Cannon Plug, Captain Black Original, and Smoker's Pride Cherry Cavendish are my most frequent smokes that I find smooth and non-irritating to my mouth or throat; but I had to try over 100 blends to find half a dozen of them I liked that didn't bug me in one way or another.
There are some other tobaccos I've had that didn't bother my mouth or throat, like Gawith's Coniston Cut Plug, Bosun Plug Cut Plug, 1792 Flake, and various ropes and twists; though I don't much care for the rose geranium topping on the cut plugs and the ropes and twists were a bit too gamey and funky tasting for my liking. I do enjoy 1792 from time to time, but the strong tonquin topping makes it more of an occasional treat than a regular everyday smoke for me.
Just about every aromatic made by Lane Limited has been fine on my mouth and throat as well, though I find I get bored of aromatics pretty quickly and am happy with my Captain Black Original and Smoker's Pride Cherry Cavendish for the occasions when I want a sweet aromatic smoke; plus a bit of Cannon Plug around the fall and winter holiday seasons. Most of the time though it's just Five Brothers and Kendal Dark for me lately.
