I have several rotations of workhorse corncobs. When it comes to my "pretty" pipes, I only buy one example of any given shape that I prefer (one bulldog, one Oom Paul, one author, and so on). I find my absolute favorite example of that shape, and that's it.
There are some exceptions. I own about 10 churchwardens because, for some reason, I feel weird smoking an English out of anything but one. Maybe it's the Lord of the Rings obsession. Also, every now and then, I find a miscellaneous or irregular shape that I have to have.

I also tend to sit on my window shopping for a while before actually making a purchase, to make sure I actually really want something before spending money on it.

Hoosier, I appreciate the hook up.

One way I control my PAD is through a strict criteria that needs to be met before I buy the pipe. The pipe has to be great for flakes. It has to have certain inside dimensions as well as outside. It has to fall into a certain weight range. It has to be of a certain shape almost always classic It has to have a real nice blast. It has t\to be an estate pipe between 200-300. It has to have a hand cut stem made from top quality German vulcanite.
An last but not least it has to give happy endings. Ok the happy endings isn't true but the rest is.

I have looked at over a thousand pipes in the last week and have not found a one that fits the bill. Hence my PAD is under control.

One of the advantages of being older (and there aren't a lot of them) is the ability to allow PAD and TAD to somewhat run rampant.
This is me, well, at least the PAD . Now if I could only figure out a way to get about 100 lbs of tobacco across the border tax-free, I'd be all set. PM me if you've got the answer puffy

I'm assuming you mean the Canadian border. Were it me, I'd buy a mailing box in the closest city on the State side. I'd build up 20 pounds or so at the box, make a trip to pick it up and bring it back in a suit case in the trunk. 4 or 5 trips and you have your 100 lbs.

I wasn't aware that non-US-residents could rent/lease/purchase mail boxes.

The thought has crossed my mind...
OK, did some looking. You'd still have to make about 200 trips greater than 2 days in length to be able to bring in all of your 100 lbs, given the 200 grams duty free limit allowance. You bring more, then you're liable to the taxes you'd be wanting to avoid in the first place—unless you choose not to declare the contents of the suitcase (and risk heavy fines and confiscation if they check and find your 20 pounds). Of course, if you're travelling with an adult passenger, then each of you can claim 200 grams duty free. (Now, 200 grams of pipe tobacco is one unit of tobacco, so I'm still unsure whether you could bring 1 kg per person, since you're entitled to 5 units of tobacco. ? )

Another thing I'm unsure of is whether you're liable to pay US taxes since the retailer is shipping to an American address. Of course, these taxes are in some cases still lower than ours; but maybe that means you have to choose a city in a state with low tobacco tax for your mailbox to be rented in.

I wasn't thinking of declaring anything. I'd take my chances.
