For me, too many options can be more paralyzing than freeing. I tend to maintain a selection of about a dozen tobaccos of varying genres to choose from as I like, and a handful of pipes that all stand out from one another in size or form. Having multiple very similar pipes would just feel like clutter, as would a stack of "cellared" tobacco tins

Then again, I also have limited space and only smoke a few times a week, so there's not much need to expand my collection

1) Having about as many pipes on my racks and in my cabinet as my local pipe shop has on its walls and in its cases.
2) Having bought more tobacco than I smoke on a regular basis so that I never buy tobacco because I might run out.
3) Having so many samples, open jars, open tins, pouches and tubs of tobacco, it is like a national holiday to me to open any of my new tins of excellent blends.
4) Having to stay away from pipe shops and pipe shows so I don't buy more, more, more.
5) Discovering pipes on my racks that I do recognize but realize I haven't smoked in many a moon.
6)Being drawn to a discount offer and then realizing that I already have a pipe or blend that approximates what is being offered and is sometimes probably a better example of its kind.
7) And so on. None of this saves me from PAD or TAD, but it does pump the breaks a little on the downhills and the curves.

Actually, other than money there isn't anything keeping my buying habits in check. I'd say space might be a restriction but my lack of space is also related to money since I'd need to spend more to get a bigger house.

Collecting other things. I have as many Fountain Pens and Ink as I do Pipes and Tobaccos, maybe more. My Razors and Blades collection needs work. The Motorcycle project and Truck project need work. Ah, and booze, I have a pretty good collection there too.

Time, outside of money, Time.

I’ve been at this for years and have all I really need.
I purposely engage in periodic episodes of serf-referral and frequent reality checks which strengthens my revolve to operate in a more responsible and realistic financial manner and to refrain from purchasing any further unnecessary items.
Of course, reading posts on this sight frequently f^*ks this all up.

Hmmmm. I have plenty of space for more pipes and tobacco, but feel no urge to get more in any hurry. Money is also no problem, nor is a wife who raises objections. So, what stops me?? Inertia, I guess.

I admit that I have a problem, and my wife does the budget. She is on maternity leave and we have 2 children to put through college someday, a mortgage, bills, and more bills, retirement fund. I am glad I have her to tell me "STOP"

Just conscientiousness. I don’t let anything get out of hand. After an initial spree of buying and trying, I’ll settle on some favourites, keep them stocked, and move on to some other pursuit.

The next thing is likely going to be catching up a stack of books I have to read. And reading them in a comfy chair with a pipe certainly is fun.
