What curbed my PAD was realizing there was always going to be the situation of “a few more” for me personally. I got a couple pipes, needed just a few more. Got a few more, but wanted a few more nicer ones. Got a few nicer ones, but needed a few more for different blends. Most of you know this well, and know where it leads. It leads to an ass load of pipes! As little as I smoke, I couldn’t justify the expense of such a cycle.

Continuing the “a few more” trend, I used to think that if I didn’t buy a pipe I was obsessed with right when I saw it, I’d never find it again. While that can be true for a very specific pipe, I found that every time I browse pipes online I find a few more that I adore and would happily own. So I don’t feel the need to immediately snatch pipes up anymore.

I’m currently in the grips of TAD, but I set a very strict budget of no more than $50 per paycheck on tobacco. Slow and steady has gotten me a nice little cellar since I started stocking up last August. Laughable to a lot of folks, but nice by my modest standards.

Well probably the fact that even 10 pipes should last me many many years with proper care. So my 15 or so pipes is all I need. I'm not much of a collector, I am more practical and like to use the things I own.

Now I just feed the urge by buying pipes to resell. And I just end up keeping the ones that are a bit damaged. So I have about 35 or 40 pipes in my possession at the moment. I guess my spending and personal collecting is somewhat in check, but the searching and aquiring is still spiralling horribly out of control! Ha, just kidding. It's not an obsession, just a habit, hobby and lifestyle...right?

Well it's basically the insane price of tobacco in Canada. But I went to Europe and loaded up on all I could. But I like to buy whole leaf leaves and learn the art of processing and blending. I also grow too. So I don't exactly make alot of purchases, I spend more time and energy experimenting with leaf.

All I'm saying is... if I were multi-millionaire, or billionaire, I'd probably have to buy a whole building with armed guards to house all the pipes and tobacco I'd be blowing my money on. I like to think I'd be using my money for more important things, but I'm weak man, just weak.

As a rule, I try to use everything that I keep around with some regularity. Some tools are used once per year, some are used weekly or daily. I try to apply the "monthly" use approach to my pipes.

Tobacco is a free for all. It's cheap, and I derive so much enjoyment out of it that it's worth the cost.

PAD: I don't have it, doubt I'll get it. But as 6 out of my 7 pipes were gotten for free, from old friends and relatives who smoked a pipe 30 years ago, I want to commission 3 pipes, a billiard, a bent billiard and a bulldog. I tell myself that's all I want from pipes.

TAD: money and challenges to get the tobaccos I like in Greece, which means I need to circumvent these challenges by sending tobacco to my office in the UK, or relatives in the US. I haven't touched Germany or Switzerland yet because it'd be bad for my money.

But the chief factor is in fact unrelated to pipes or tobacco, it's related to vaping. When I started vaping I got by, was happy and didn't need a cigarette with as much as a single atomizer, and a couple of liquids. FFWD 4 years and a shitload of money later I have 1 drawer of hardware, 1 drawer of flavours for creating liquids, and 1 drawer of liquids. And I use about 10% of them. I don't want to repeat that with pipes and pipe tobacco, so I don't buy pipes, and try not to stray too far into trying new blends. I know I'll be happy if I have 10 blends, and 10 pipes and am conscious to keep it that way.

The only thing thing that keeps my tad in check is a lack of funds. If I won the lottery I dread to think how out of hand it might get .
Still one man's 'out of hand' is another's perfectly reasonable cellar.

I’ve got a goal of 17lbs of tobacco. Got to stay away from round numbers like 10-15-20. As soon as I dip below them I’d be looking to bring it back up you “just in case” but at 17 you can dip below and then just pick some up next time ones in the states or when because 17 isn’t an important number...

And PAD. I have about 100 and am trying to get down to about 30. But does that include the Charatan collection or not? Probably should...

I actually just don’t want that many... But it’s kinda hard work. Maybe I should post some here and see if I can fire up some of your PAD lol

The draconian import laws in Australia are keeping my TAD in check. I'm not cured, but sort of forcefully institutionalized for TAD.

My PAD is kept in check mostly by reason. I don't smoke that often so it seems silly to have a massive collection of pipes. I consider myself somewhat of a minimalist as well and I just like the simplicity of only having a few pipes that I really like.

I still browse the fresh pipe selection on Smoking pipes.com twice a week, but something has to really stand out for me to develop a desire to buy it. My goal is to have no more than 5 or 6 pipes, but for each of those pipes to be a pipe that I admire from a design and quality point of view.

I'm thinking of replacing 6-7 of my unused pipes with one last higher end pipe to close the collection, a dream pipe so to speak.

Rotating 'vice' OCD every 60 days. Pipes/Pipe Tobacco -> Liquor/Wines -> Antique/Vintage Firearms -> Cigars -> Custom knives/tools -> repeat!.

I'm not saying that's a good strategy for wealth or health, but it's my little hamster wheel of dopamine. My health is balanced out in that though I have a fortune in cool stuff, I work long, travel-logged hours every week and have limited hours to enjoy. Sort of like an ATF-themed O. Henry story.

Yeah I think that really is the best we can hope for. Try to find cheaper addictions to fill time and hope it distracts you long enough to stay out of debt.

I keep my tobacco addiction to a minimum and bought a lot of pipe tobacco when it was cheaper. I still buy a few pouches, now and then, when on vacation in Europe where pouch tobacco is cheap. For PAD, after I bought my GBDs and Blatter pipes, I simply stopped.

My TAD is kept in check by being in Canada where tobacco is not worth the price. TAD is only active when I travel.

Now PAD is another issue. I am currently using the technique of keeping a supply of estate pipes on hand. If I have estates that need restoring I tell myself I shouldn’t be purchasing more pipes. I am fitting PAD with PAD.
