A Peterson System without a P-Lip is like a Maserati or Lamborghini with an automatic transmission.
Luckily most come with both these days. An automatic setting, and flappy paddles. Unfortunately the Lamborghini transmissions leave a bit to be desired.....or so I hear.
I live vicariously through online videos and hearsay. :)
But my 2014 BMW M4 kinda has both. Its automatic, but has an option for clutchless flappy paddles which are actually pretty effective.

My Subaru Legacy has those clutchless flippy paddles, but I've only tried them once or twice as most of my driving is puttering about my small-ish city. I need to break it open on the bypass highway sometime to figure it out.

Sinse ive added a 120mm twin turbo to the BMW, the flappy paddles need to be used very carefully. The engine could grenade if I dont time it right. :(

Can't imagine its cheaper and they don't seem to be that popular. I sure as hell don't like them. Wanted to pick up a Rua but they're all P-Lips. Miss my fishtail Petersons
The P-lip is clearly working for them.
Popular and talked about positively are two totally different things.
Personally I prefer the P-lip but not enough to make a real difference.
Clearly there is a demand for it and they don't seem to have any issue with moving the pipes.

I tend to think about these things from the perspective of evolution. The P-Lip has it's fans via devotees to the Peterson brand and history, but as the orific bit evolved into the slotted fan bit we use today, the countless brands that copied the P-Lip (Wellington, BBB Glokar, etc.) eventually stopped, leaving Peterson the last man standing. It could certainly be that Peterson took everyone to court over the issue and drove the rest of the industry away from their design copies, but if they did it's news to me. I think a likelier story is that it simply ceded to more conventional, comfortable and convenient (e.g. easier to clean) designs.

I have one peterson, its a p lip. its different, but its not bad at all.

Id be more intersted in a fish tail, if it had the internal cone structure in it. It helps ME.

I had nothing but fishtails for the first couple years of smoking a pipe. Peterson, Rossi, Savinelli, MMs and Meers. Finally tried a p-lip which was actually on a Savinelli Dry System 614. It got me to buy my first Peterson p-lip system pipe, and now I have 4: Pub, 05, B42, and 303. The 303 is my EDC go anywhere pipe and the B42 is probably my favorite to sit with because it smokes so good and feels the best in the hand of any pipe I’ve ever smoked. I almost never bought any because of previous Peterson QC issues but now system pipes with p-lips are the only pipes I want to buy. I prefer acrylic for less maintenance but I’ll take either if I find the right deal.

My first pipe was a Pete p-lip. Didn't realized how bad it was until I bought my second, Non-Peterson, pipe. No going back for me. P-lips are difficult for me to clench and don't seem to readily hold softie bits to improve the situation.
