They are all great! Was just trying to get to the bottom of the Peterson pic pipe, never even knew there was a 4S.
Its had different numbers depending on year and configuration and size. Its easier to go by basic shape: Small, medium, large , extra large Billiard, straight Billiard, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, full bent billiard. Short, medium, tall, x-large dutch (Petersons version of a Hungarian was called a Dutch from soldiers returning from the Boer War - (Oom Paul is slang and offensive to some people - original term was Hungarian). The modern equivalents and a bit smaller are the House Pipe (closest to 0 series) and the Pub Pipe (closest to dutch and Hungarian). They still sell some Dutch models. Bes tto look at a shape chart then order based on chamber size. Its hardest to find a natural finish pipe at a reasonable price.

I agree with a caveat: being a Sherlock Holmes, it’s a fairly new-ish design. But it isn’t that different from 305 perhaps and still looks very classic Peterson. I’m also worried about P-lip. I want to get a Peterson but I think I’ll get a fishtail and I need to get vulcanite.
I have a 305 Calabash P-lip. I was worried it would constantly blow smoke in one spot until it burnt the roof of my mouth. Smokes extremely cool, I much prefer ot now over my many Fishtails.

I read that same post earlier today. I wondered what shape was used in the Thinking Man ad.

Love it and in the 309/4 series my favorite is the 4AB, but so classic.

In the world of chubbier, enjoying a B42 at the moment which has quite a history as a shape as well, so pretty iconic. 6242F0CC-0260-48D1-82D7-81166168EA8F.jpeg

For me, the most classic & iconic pipes, the ones that just scream Peterson, are the 107 straight billiard and the 313 bent billiard.

The 107 is a great example of an Irish straight pipe. Big & robust yet true to form & traditional dimensions.

The 313 is a wonderful example of Peterson's patented system pipes, and is what comes to mind when I think of an Irish pipe. The 313 traces it's lineage back to the 1896 Peterson catalog. (When not carved as a system pipe, the 313 is designated as the 338).

Both are readily available today. Traditional smooth brown finish, with a nickel band and vulcanite stem are perfect! Just my .02

Should I take the plunge?
I'm glad I did. But when I say its great, I mean on a Peterson. I can't vouch for any other pipe except Savinelli, they're great too. Grabow makes one; never tried it. Those others I have no idea. If you think you might like a smaller rounded off edge with the teeth notches, then go for it, but don't let scorching the roof of your mouth be a fear with Peterson or Savinelli. Just my opinion though.

What about taste? Does it change the way you taste the tobacco?

Peterson coats their pipes with something. I don't know what it is. It's not good though. First few smokes taste weaker in flavor and there is a slight something. It's not gross, but it doesn't deliver the flavor until you smoke a few bowls. Then yes, it's a great smoke. The plip helps you smell the smoke which is a huge part of taste, and it will still fall back down onto your tongue too.

Thanks for that.

I saw you are from Japan. Your English is very good. I thought you were American.
I’m American. I’ve lived in Japan for many years even though my Japanese is terrible. But I live in a bubble. My wife is Vietnamese. But I have two small kids who are entering the school system here and will be educated in Japanese. Anyway, I’m American. I live in Osaka.

FYI, many don't, but I remove the bowl coating before using a new Peterson. Just did it Monday (and will do it again today, haha). It took 10 half sheets of paper towels twisted, dipped in warm water and scrunched around in the bowl, plus about 6 pipe cleaners for the finishing up. Total of 6 minutes.
Thanks for this tip. I got my first brand new Pete (second Pete overall) and I've been wondering if I should smoke it as is or remove the bowl coating. I think I'll remove using your method.

Some don’t, but as goopy as the news one can occasionally be and as easily as it comes out I figure why take a chance it might interfere with a good blend. It may still have some streaks left or may reveal some stain that’s covered up at the top inside the chamber but big deal. Usually it just reveals the nice briar.

I have been following this thread and was squarely in the 309/S camp. Kept finding myself looking at pictures of 309s and checking new Peterson listings on EBay. Eventually I decided it was another Peterson I would like to have but unlikely ever will. A few days ago it went on the mental list of unlikely pipes in my head with the 4AB and 2017 POTY and I gave it no more thought.

This morning it occurred to me that I had a couple of Peterson System pipes in a box of pipes I had bought as a lot to get something else. Don’t even remember what the pipe I wanted out of the lot was it was so many years ago. Despite knowing the outrageous odds of one of them being a 309, I went and found the box. Inside was a Peterson System 309. It will be on its way to be restored next week.592AD675-07E0-4BA8-835C-D7DBE87EDA04.jpeg
