I have been following this thread and was squarely in the 309/S camp. Kept finding myself looking at pictures of 309s and checking new Peterson listings on EBay. Eventually I decided it was another Peterson I would like to have but unlikely ever will. A few days ago it went on the mental list of unlikely pipes in my head with the 4AB and 2017 POTY and I gave it no more thought.

This morning it occurred to me that I had a couple of Peterson System pipes in a box of pipes I had bought as a lot to get something else. Don’t even remember what the pipe I wanted out of the lot was it was so many years ago. Despite knowing the outrageous odds of one of them being a 309, I went and found the box. Inside was a Peterson System 309. It will be on its way to be restored next week.View attachment 208705
Nice one. Love to see how it turns out.

I would buy a lot more Petersons if they also offered standard/fishtail stem as a standard option on their pipes instead of everything in p-lip.
i wondered if i would not like the p-lip, too. then i tried it. no problem at all and i just may prefer it for a hanger/bent pipe, especially if a system. No longer concerned about trying it on a straight pipe if they pipe you want doesn't offer fishtail (are there any like that anymore?).

I haven't spent tons of time researching which Peterson models come with (at least option of) fishtail versus p-lip. I have several Peterson Shorts that I bought because I generally prefer smaller pipes and those only come in fishtails. A few of the larger and/or more expensive Petersons I've looked at from time to time always seem to be p-lips, and I don't recall seeing fishtail stems as an alternative ordering option for most of the pipes on Peterson's website. I could always get a replacement stem made for any pipe after-market, of course, but just doesn't seem worth the time and expense to do that for a brand new pipe (maybe for an estate pipe, though).

Thanks for this tip. I got my first brand new Pete (second Pete overall) and I've been wondering if I should smoke it as is or remove the bowl coating. I think I'll remove using your method.
If the lining looks too thick I will knock it down smooth with some sandpaper and paper towels. I always moisten the inside of the bowl with a pipe cleaner tip dipped in dark rum and load it up 1/3 and smoke it to the bottom. Rinse & Repeat until I've built up cake in the heel and bottom 1/3 of the pipe. I never swab out the bowl until I've built up cake. The sugars in the rum will help cake stick, I've found this works best with VAs.

Deluxe Systems, Sherlock Series, House/Pub, and a few others are still only offered with P-Lip stems.

Yeah, it looks like of the few FT Sherlock’s the majority are 9mm pipes. Seems the production is really low though.
Harder to find and SP EU a good source. I got a Lestrade in an Xmas Sherlock a year or two ago from them and have since sold it, it was a “whale tail”, lol - so technically a mammal tail, haha. Just too darn wide. The fishtail on the SPD 999 and the SPD B42 I got are just on the edge for me, the 68 is perfect, but once they are hanging the weird feeling goes right away. I don’t mind their fishtails on their slimmer shapes at all and have fishatails on all my shorts but not sure Plip is even an option on the shorts I have (all bent). Love the Plip, though.

P-Lip doesn't bother me, I was just interested seeing them. I just ordered a blasted Milverton from GQ two days ago.

I think the 999 is pretty quintessentially Peterson, but lately, if I see a sandblasted 408 with a big silver band on it, I think "that's what an Irish pipe looks like." Don't know why. I'm not very bright.
