While it may not be the 'most classic', for me my "Full Pete" embodies the most Petey-ness things I could put together in one pipe: Pete rustication, system, spigot, p-lip and went for bigger size XL315. And it is a comfortable hands-free/hanger too (i credit the p-lip).

Yeah their rustication is unique -- that pipe is about an unmistakably Pete as it gets.

Which pipe is Charles Peterson depicted as smoking ? That would be the quintessential model as they used it in their own advertising to reflect the company. Most likely the 01. "The shape was apparently a favorite of both Charles and John—the O1 (“O” for Oversized)—and is found on the first first page of Patent shapes in the 1906 catalog.' Isn’t it a 309?

IMO, it’s more of a general homage to when many pipes were of a smaller scale, they aren’t replicas of Peterson pipes of the early 20th century.

FWIW, I have a couple and they are good pipes - I like them for road trips and a couple of them fit nicely in a pipe roll up thing.
I second the praise for the Shorts -- nice little pipes and perfect for outdoors or traveling...

For me, this calabash-style shape. Looks to me classic Peterson, and when i see it, i say "this is Peterson". I love them.

I want to buy one like this Peterson pipes, but they coming with p-lip system, and it scares me that I won't like it.
I would buy a lot more Petersons if they also offered standard/fishtail stem as a standard option on their pipes instead of everything in p-lip.

I think they offer a lot of pipes with fishtails now. I think it's mostly their high end pipes that they might not offer fishtails.

Part of the joy of Peterson pipes is that, like a family, they all carry that resemblance even with the less typical shapes. I guess the classic-classics are the bent systems pipes with wide nickel bands and p-lip stems. My special favorites are the B11 bent brandy, of which I have two, and the B10 bent briar Calabash in the Donegal rusticated series which is lumpy textured but wears exceedingly well. I'm also holding in readiness my St. Patrick's Day pipe, which in my case is an Around the World slightly bent bulldog in red stain with a Celtic cross on its wide square nickel band. I do have one p-lip, a Rhodesian 999, that I enjoy as a change of pace.

Found this, may shed some light on 309 and shape 4. The particular shape of the Thinking Man was apparently 4S. Peterson 309 shape – Peterson Pipe Notes - https://petersonpipenotes.org/tag/peterson-309-shape/
The 309 is a bent dutch and would be my second choice for quintessential Peterson but my first choice to answer the O.P.'s question would be the 01 shape.

They are all great! Was just trying to get to the bottom of the Peterson pic pipe, never even knew there was a 4S.

That's one of the two Petersons I own: a smooth 305, but in the System Standard facing. It is very classic in a Sherlock kind of way.
