For me, this calabash-style shape. Looks to me classic Peterson, and when i see it, i say "this is Peterson". I love them.

I want to buy one like this Peterson pipes, but they coming with p-lip system, and it scares me that I won't like it.

I agree with a caveat: being a Sherlock Holmes, it’s a fairly new-ish design. But it isn’t that different from 305 perhaps and still looks very classic Peterson. I’m also worried about P-lip. I want to get a Peterson but I think I’ll get a fishtail and I need to get vulcanite.

Yes for 305. And the 315 too. I am curious about p-lip, but in the end of the day I'll go for classic fishtail.

The new Short pipes are depicted as throwbacks to an earlier day. I wonder if there’s anything to that or what they’re talking about in that marketing point.
IMO, it’s more of a general homage to when many pipes were of a smaller scale, they aren’t replicas of Peterson pipes of the early 20th century.

FWIW, I have a couple and they are good pipes - I like them for road trips and a couple of them fit nicely in a pipe roll up thing.

I've often wondered this. It should have metal, and it should be a smooth. But I can't narrow it down from these.

An outlier candidate to my mind (mostly because it's straight stem) is this 1997 Pipe of the Year, Limited Edition. The sterling silver is tarnishing beneath the gold plate (which isn't much longer for this world). I think it's more of a classic in terms of its heritage than its actual design, if that makes sense.

The Mark Twains (this is an early production example) certainly have that classic look. This one, with the walnut stain and the P-lip, has to be a serious contender.

I've posted in another thread recently about my "The Original" from the Sherlock Holmes series, shape number XL11. It's also called the Calabash or a bent urn.

And the Sherlock Holmes Lestrade, the bent ball or shape #XL23, is a brilliant shape.

But ultimately I lean towards this 9S Deluxe natural with P-lip.

Although a 309 or a 315 screams Peterson, each of those shapes is a bit of an extreme which may not represent the center of classic Peterson shaping. I think of the 308 as embodying that center.

Now I realize that one isn’t in the catalogue anymore. A classic indeed!

Short pipes and diminutive pipes were definitely more popular in the early part of the 20th century. There were pipes called sports pipes, Peterson called em' sportsman pipes. They were generally marketed towards golfers. The new "short" pipes are a homage to those early Sportsman's.

Pretty much everything in the System Standard Heritage Line says turn of the century to me, they pretty much mirror the shapes that made not just Peterson famous but were also copied heavily in the US by WDC with the Wellington and KB&B with the Chesterfield. To me the 307 really embodies the shape that was the most most popular across all the system pipes. Sure WDC & KBB copied other shapes in the system range but the 307 was by far the most copied.79B83E27-CA86-4668-B50F-306DC6E72B00.jpeg1E314975-BF86-4607-A120-6F5EAF81CCB6.jpeg888246F6-8609-42B2-B911-6E2A309A1A6D.jpeg
