I get whole leaf Virginia from WLT. If $18lb +\- including stems counts as bulk. They have a nice choice (I like the “ripe”) and no casings, toppings or pg.
I agree with Mr. King. Va Flake with some age on it is very good indeed. I'll have to try Opening Night again. It's one of those CD staples I tried years ago that dropped off my radar. In my opinion, CD makes some very good stuff and I will be trying more of their offerings. My favorite is Mac Baren VA Flake. It's one of the few that STG is retaining subsequent to their portfolio disembowelment, but who knows if it'll be the same product going forward. C&D Opening Night is another fantastic one. Just my two cents.
How do the two differ?MB HH Pure Virginia and Virginia Flake.
I find the flake to be sweeter than the HH, but that's just me.How do the two differ?
I don't think NM400 is the same as 507c. I think is was a PS blend that Leonard said was the same as 507c.If you can tolerate Perique, Stokkebye 4th Gen Evening Flake can be bought by the pound (still I think) and is very nice.
Newminster 400 (aka Sutliff 507c) is gorgeous straight Va.
2nd the recommendation for MB HH Pure Virginia. If you see any of these, order it!
Peretti has Ampersand Flake on their site today, and is delicious.
Dan Tobacco Hamborger Veermaster is wonderful and available in 250g bags.
Thanks! I won't know either wayI find the flake to be sweeter than the HH, but that's just me.
The Pure Virginia is a bit fuller bodied, the Flake sweeter. How do the two differ?
Thanks! Is there a bulk that you'd recommend that will remain after MB closes down? I've been interested to try Sir John's because of you're recommendation but have been looking for bulk options first. Right now what I've enjoyed most is NM400.The Pure Virginia is a bit fuller bodied, the Flake sweeter.
"No top note or casing" limits your options quite a bit, and rules out many of the suggestions in this thread.been looking for a good quality bulk virginia with no top note or casing, just good quality tobacco.
Right. my bad. both great tho! Is it the PS Luxury Navy Flake (advertised with perique but denied by sources in the know)?I don't think NM400 is the same as 507c. I think is was a PS blend that Leonard said was the same as 507c.
It does have an extremely small amount of Perique, I can tell.Right. my bad. both great tho! Is it the PS Luxury Navy Flake (advertised with perique but denied by sources in the know)?
Yes every tobacco has a casing. Without it it would not be a pleasurable smokeAlmost everything has casing to some degree. You can't process and work tobacco when it's bone dry. So, you want something with minimal casing and perceived as natural as possible. I tried ages ago before the brand was sold one of the Daughters & Ryan straight virginias and it was quite excellent. I think it was Windsail.
From what I understand, the HH Pure Virginia is going to be around. But 10 to 20 lbs of it and cellar it. NM400 is another good choice but I don't like it quite as much. Check out a couple of the C&D Virginias that are sold in bulk. I think you can still buy GLP Union Square in 8 oz tins. Thanks! I have several ounces and enjoy it. Wonder if They make it themselve. Some really good VA's mentioned here, but I will tell you about a wonderful little "gem" that you can get in bulk and that is "Faulkner Flake" from the Country Squire. If you have not tried it, you really should.
Too sweet or not enough VA taste?NM400 is another good choice but I don't like it quite as much.
This is a good point that I've honestly not thought about. I've been thinking from the perspective of building a cellar but I might be smoking a pound a year.Unless you're smoking 10 lbs per year, the bulk savings isn't worth compromising your choices.
