What Is It About a Cob?

There’s nothing magic about briar. In fact, it’s a relatively recent invention in pipesmoking when compared to clays and meerschaum. So if you enjoy cobs, or pear woods, or whatever, then own it, go for it. There’s no single right way to enjoy tobacco.

I’ll echo the support for burley in a cob but also add bright Virginia’s. I find cobs to really enhance brighter Virginia’s.

I think I like Latakia best in either briar or morta. Cobs do tend to mute the Lat a touch in my opinion. Or it could simply be that I just haven’t smoked enough of it in any of mine. I much prefer my cobs for American-style blends, though.

I enjoy cobs but rarely choose one over a briar. I think a lot of people like the open draw that cobs provide, I do too, which is why I’ve opened up 90% of my briars to Rick Newcombe’s specs. I wouldn’t have it any other way. It can be tricky to learn how to do it at first, you aren’t just opening up the stummel, you also have to open the stem from both ends as well and that can be a learning curve and it’s time consuming but for me, nothing beats a briar with an open draw (it’s the first thing I do when I get a new pipe). If you are going to do it, practice on old pipes you wouldn’t mind losing.

I bought an MM Legend and a pack of St Bruno on something of a whim recently, thinking if this still holds no appeal, there's no major sunk cost. But what a revelation. As others above have commented, when I think what I spent on briars back in the day, this cheap little pipe has them all beat for pennies.

In the days since I have been researching the hell out of MM and cobs, and think I'll be adding a Dagner Poker and a Country Gent to get something of a rotation going.

There's something cheerily life affirming to find MM still in business, and apparently thriving, God bless them!

Yep. They’re mostly what I smoke when I’m working on knives in the shop.

If they were they would actually be usable and the bit wouldn’t feel like a plastic piece of garbage. Oh, and forever stems are garbage too.

Burley ( my favorite) tastes better in a cob. Cobs take less maintenance and are lighter, in my opinion.

I mostly smoke burley based blends lately and they seem to smoke better in a cob but I also agree it could all just be in my head.

Love my briar Petersons and Savinellis, but my cobs are like that old girlfriend you can't get out of your system. Every second, or third bowl is a cob. Smoke great and I don't mind clenching the MM amber stems when I'm working in the shop; they're inexpensive enough to chew on.
