What Is a Dried Out Classic Tobacco Worth To You?

I paid the equivalent of 'new tobacco in NZ price' for a sealed pack of 'Havelock Aromatic' tobacco that my great grandfather requested from the trenches in his letters home in WW1 (my pack looked to be from the 1950s though). The fact that after hydrating the tobacco was smokeable was just a bonus, I was collecting family nostalgia.

I don't believe there will be any reason to purchase old tobacco again.

An interesting 'exception' to this might be Edgeworth Slices. Always available in cellophane-wrapped hinged-lid tins, it is inevitably dried out when you find a tin, and yet with some gentle, passive rehydration it turns into one of the best burleys out there.

By extension, there are tobaccos out there that have such good leaf that some rehydrating leaves you with a very, very good tobacco. I've had luck with old Capstan, Players, Sobranie No.10, and Cope's Escudo, among others. McClelland bulk Virginias also rehydrate beautifully, again, because the base leaf is of such stellar quality.

I'd be willing to pay around $20 a tin for these. And a little more for old plugs and twists.

Here's the hypothetical:

Someone is listing a tin of a legendary tobacco, one that hasn't been in production for at least 40 years, but that tin has been opened, partially smoked, and now the contents are dusty. Tins of this tobacco rarely show up and when they do, usually sell for $400. What would you pay for such an opened tin?

I wouldn't want to buy any tobacco in that condition. You wouldn't get to truly experience the blend if it's all dusty and dry. If it was dried but still able to be rehydrated then maybe I'd consider it for the right blend blend.

The strength is a firetruck past full, while the taste is right in the middle full to “call the coroner.” No nic-hit here and nothing but rough edges. It breaks apart easily and burns like a flamethrower. Consistent flavor top to bottom. Leaves no dampness in the bowl, and has a pleasant room note that’ll remind you of the time you locked yourself in the attic. Requires no relights. An all-day smoke but book a hospital bed in advance! 4 stars!
