The most terrible example is citrus. The greening disease has killed off most of the groves. All those wonderful mandarins, grapefruit, oranges are for the most part a thing of the past.
We should have great local fish in our markets, but truly great fish is hard to find here unless you catch it yourself. I can find it sometimes in a real fish camp—almost never in even good restaurants.

The best thing for me is/was Gulf Shrimp. Not those puny things supermarkets carry, but massive, firm and tasty shrimp. Some areas in the US call large shrimp "prawns".
Over here, shrimps are those tiny things one collects with a shrimp dredge in the shallows, prawns are larger (about 2-3 inches across. What you guys call 'shrimp' we call scampi.
Whatever they're called, they're all a delight to eat.

Pie, mash and liquor (a type of gravy)
Jellied eels ( a rarity these days)
Cockles and whelks (sold in the pub by a cockle man but not for many years))
National British dishes but essential:
Fish and chips (and mushy peas)
Bangers and Mash
Sunday Roast.
These are old school favourites - Modern London food these days is some of the most diverse on the planet!

Prawns are a different creature than shrimp. They have three sets of legs and claws. But, they taste very similar.
Let's see: we have burgoo, spoonbread, hot brown, barbecue, and bourbon.
Garbage plate. Almost every mid-scale eatery in the Rochester NY area offers this delicacy. A connoisseur's delight for growin' boys and drunks of all kinds. Get the original at Nick Tahous on West Main, if you're good at dodging the occasional bullet.
Let us not forget about pork roll and some shoefly pie from Lancaster.

Yup. But I fear many places call larger shrimp by that name. I miss my Gulf shrimp!

And, yeah, British cuisine today is unrecognizable from a couple of decades ago. It's so much better, and very diverse.

there are superb Indian/South Asian restaurants in London especially Brick Lane in the East End
I can remember years ago (1980's) the 'winkleman' turning up in pubs to sell his wares in Sheffield city centre.
He would wear his tray of wares, usually just cockles and winkles, and travel from pub to pub. I always wondered how he managed to keep his tray full of stock as he was so popular but never seemed to run out.
