Also ample Magnesium in the soil tends to turn ash white. The Cubans didn't start amending with heavy magnesium until a decade ago, hence why Cuban ash went from dingy dark grey/black to a whiter color in that time frame. Fun fact: Nicaraguan soil tends to be high in magnesium, so most Nicaraguans have whiter ash. There are other chemical constituents at play, but I believe Magnesium is the prime factor.

Had a La Flor Dominicana Air Bender on the way driving home from work yesterday. No pic because I'm not reckless. I'm so happy to have rediscovered this blend - it is probably my favorite LFD blend.
Great info, I always attributed it to being a bit more spicier taste profile and to age. Maybe the spice and magnesium go hand in hand somehow. When smoking a "mellower" cigar I never get a compact white ash like that.

The one I smoked the other day was great, I may need to pick up some more (air benders)

I'm kind of shocked in that I almost always prefer a skinnier cigar - the skinnier, the better. My favorite Hoyo was the du Gourmet, my favorite Por Larrañaga is the Monte Carlos, and favorite La Gloria were the Medaille d'Oro no 1 and 3. With the Air Bender, however, I actually prefer the Maestro, which is a 52 RG behemoth of a robusto (for me). It's a better blend than the Matatan, which is a traditional 5 x 50 robusto. I do wish they'd release the lancero again - can't remember if I ever tried one.

From my sampler of twelve "dog-walker" cigars, not cigarillos but short, from Iwan Ries, I smoke one of twelve cigars the first of each month, so for April Fool's Day, I chose the Romeo Y Julieta, that famous old Dominican Republic standard, with lively flavor and a bit of sweetness.

For my April Fools joke, I told my wife there was a hen on the front porch, a possibility since the neighborhood has an urban chicken coop in one yard. I quickly admitted that this was a lame April Fool's joke. My wife is a farm girl, so was momentarily thrilled, and got a good laugh when it was a joke.
