Since you are from Britain - This dish may have a European origin. Kolkata was the capital/ chief command center of British India, so there are many local dishes that may have been originally European but modified to local taste over 100+ years.

Very true, there’s also a few Indian dishes in UK restaurants that were devised here like Chicken Tikka Masala which I think is the most popular dish in Britain. It is good but I don’t remember seeing it on menu’s when I lived in the US.
