Well, today is a special day for me. If my dad were still living, he would be 98 years old today. Sadly, we lost him in 2014.
I do have the old 1950's era Medico pipe that he smoked when I was just a small child. It was in pretty rough shape and broken so I had it repaired and restored a few years back. Today.... on his birthday.... I am smoking it for the very first time.
I wanted to do it just like he did so I went old school. I am smoking Sir Walter Raleigh, which is all he ever smoked and I am lighting it with matches and the "tamper" is my index finger. Assisting me in this endeavor, is a Diet Coke. Finally, I reamed it out with my pocket knife. All of these things were the methods that he used. He did have a cool pipe stand that is shown in some of the photos below. He was in the U. S. Army and one of the photos below shows him wearing a hooded, water-proof coat while crossing the Atlantic aboard a ship, near the end of WWII.
Happy Birthday, Dad..... we sure miss you.

Thanks @gord ! It’s a killer smoker and I really enjoy it in the mornings with Coffee or the Evenings with Tea. The specs on Bruno Nuttens Twiggy’s areBeauty. Don't think I've seen this one either - but my perception is sharper than it used to be so I perhaps just missed it. Photo is new though, I think - you've covered up your Dad's car . . . . .
This is a type of pipe I've come to appreciate more and more especially as I've vastly improved my slow smoking techniques. . . . Lots of wood to smoke cool, and a smaller bowl to limit the length to something reasonable.
This is a beautiful pipe . . . next time you show it, can you do a from the side? l'd love to see it's silhouette shape.
That pipe is a beauty!Sam's Chocolate Flake in my new birthday pipe, a Peterson Liscannor (my first pete!) View attachment 392728
Thanks! I'll have to look into a Twiggy next pipe buying spree, probably Sept 1. Have a few new additions (yeah, I pressed the trigger on that black Mr. Brog Nosewarmer just last nightTh

We had a big OktoberFest in Vancouver when I lived there up until 1974. It was a great gig - my alter ego was bass trombone, which I gigged with as much as I could. Always fun! This shot brings back memories, we did the costume thing as well . . . . hmmmm . . . what is that I see in the foreground? A Wagnerian Tuba? lol love it! Must be a gigging symphony guy in there, taking a break from Gotterdamerung!Huber English Perique in a Savinelli Tortuga 673KS and the second beer at the Maibockfest. When being honest it's number 5.
