A couple of minutes away from smoking year 2012 Esoterica Dunbar in a smooth straight, dark brown early 1960s Lane era Charatan Selected 43 Dublin with a black vulcanite double comfort saddle stem. This pipe was formerly owned by actor William Conrad. Had to play traffic cop to keep Abner the Eager and Tomato the Brave from each other's food.

I was reading a book slow smoking loosely packed Lane 1-Q in the newly reemed Vauen Olaf bent egg and went an hour and twenty minutes before it went out naturally. It almost died out two times and I had to puff a bit to reignite the ember. No tamping either just dumped ash. I think this is the longest I have ever gone with that bowl (20mmx46mm).

I read a blog that said too much cake can cause a pipe bowl to crack. I don't know if that's true but since the cake in my Vauen bent egg was more than a nickel in width I decided to reem the bowl this morning to just above the draft hole which is dead center bottom. I left a thin layer all around. I was surprised at how sweet the bowl smelled afterwards. I guess Lane 1-Q has some ghosting properties. I then loaded a bowl of Lane 1-Q with some sutliffe 507-c on top and Wow ! The flavor is much improved. And ... it holds a little more tobacco now !! Nice slow smoke today. Might reem the Savinelli tommorrow.
Removing the old carbons always sweetens the smoke for me.
