I read a blog that said too much cake can cause a pipe bowl to crack. I don't know if that's true but since the cake in my Vauen bent egg was more than a nickel in width I decided to reem the bowl this morning to just above the draft hole which is dead center bottom. I left a thin layer all around. I was surprised at how sweet the bowl smelled afterwards. I guess Lane 1-Q has some ghosting properties. I then loaded a bowl of Lane 1-Q with some sutliffe 507-c on top and Wow ! The flavor is much improved. And ... it holds a little more tobacco now !! Nice slow smoke today. Might reem the Savinelli tommorrow.

1914 Adolph Posener. Only the second bowl ever for this little pipe in 109 years. I decided to finally try some Penzance. Mellow and interesting is what is coming to mind as I type. I’m no expert but I know “good”. Someone on this forum sent me this little jar some time ago and I’m very embarrassed I didn’t leave a note in the “cellar” so I wouldn’t forget who it was. If you recognize your handwriting please let me know and thanks again!IMG_2520.jpeg

Up at bat ... Captain Black white - a much maligned, much praised tobacco. Funny how people have such totally different experiences with various tobaccos. To assemble a coherent "review of the literature" on a particular tobacco is maddening. Smoking this in a Blatter & Blatter (Montreal) slightly bent pipe with one red dot. (I called them once and ask to explain what the dot system meant. Think I can remember what he told me?)

@WerewolfOfLondon to get the full on 'Old Codger UK' look you need an electric blue nylon flat cap, you should be wearing open toed sandals with socks and walking along the promenade at Blackpool smoking a Falcon pipe full of St Bruno whilst moaning about the breakfast you had at the boarding house - then you have the look down pat!

Funny you should say that. I went to Hastings for the weekend and I bought this in a Morrison's. Literally OTC in a seaside resort not too unlike Blackpool. Didn't smoke any St B down there, but did have a nice few bowls of a house blend I got from a tobacconist in the Old Town, a rum cased virginia/burley. A real maritime blend, perfect for the surroundings. Not as nice as St B though.

I want to thank this supportive community for being here, I’m pretty isolated other than my awesome wife and cats. I miss close male friendships, I’ve lost my closest friends to cancer and various behaviors they couldn’t give up from their youth. Cheers!
Men tend to lose most of their friends as they reach middle age and get married with kids leading to isolation and loneliness. Not trying to depress everybody, but it does make male interactions such as this forum important to all of us. Thank you Ben for being my forum friend, it is appreciated.

Passing the half way mark on this bowl of Sutliff States of Virginia Limited Edition ’23 in a smooth brown three quarter bend 1970s Charatan Belvedere 4211DC egg with a black vulcanite double comfort saddle stem. Haven't smoked this pipe lately, so it was time to do so. Ice water and bergs is my drink.
