Old Dark Fired in a Falcon

View attachment 368032

I ordered an ounce of the ODF ready rubbed in December, because I wanted to start trying some dark fired tobacco, and I wanted see what this one was like before it disappears. The jar note--strong bbq sauce--is interesting, but not particularly appealing. After yesterday's delicious C&D Burley Flake #1, I decided that today's the day for the ODF.

I packed some into my smaller Falcon bowl without any drying. At first it was overall boring: not much flavor, little aroma, and too many relights as it kept trying to crawl up and out of the bowl. I was about to give up and have some Lancer instead, when I hit the 1/3 mark, and suddenly started getting a lot of rich flavor as well as aroma. I actually tasted bbq sauce once or twice, but mostly sweetness, wood smoke, and occasionally some charred meaty flavor. I didn't want to like this, but I guess I'm going to have to troll the sites and see if I can find a little more before it's gone, and some of the Bold Kentucky too.

Next time you could always try ODF flake. Richer, deeper flavor than the RR IMO, as is typical for such scenarios.

Just made it back to the smoking lounge. After a couple cigars for the drive to and fro today, it's time for a relaxing VAper in a Radice Pure billiard.

I've been really working on breaking in this meerschaum bowl for my Falcon tonight! First I smoked Lane Very Cherry, then Sutliff 507C Virginia Slices, and now I've got it filled up again with Arango Balkan Supreme.

That is the neat thing about a meerschaum bowl and a Falcon stem though, that they don't tend to ghost and past letting them cool down and giving them a quick cleaning between smokes (and changing the dry ring every couple smokes) neither really need a rest; and you can keep the pipe hanging from your lip more or less all day long. Or all evening long, in my case. puffy
