It might just be my personal mouth chemistry, but for me bright Virginias always sting the everliving daylights out of the roof of my mouth and have the same effect on my sinuses when retrohaled, which I always attributed to the pH of the tobacco. I don't get any sting from Burleys or Latakia, just a little sting from red Virginias, less from stoved Virginias depending on how heavily they're stoved, and none at all from dark fired Virginias. For my mouth chemistry at least the more alkaline a tobacco is the more comfortable a mouthfeel the smoke will have.
Running bright Virginias through a filter does take away the sting to varying degrees depending on the type of filter though. Balsa wood filters have zero effect on it, activated charcoal filters reduce it somewhat, Medico paper tube filters reduce it a bit more, and Dr. Grabow paper tube filters take the sting away completely. I'm not exactly sure what the mechanics of that process are, but that certainly is how it works for my mouth. Your results may vary.

My experience with pipe filters was iffy . . . I finally abandoned them when I forgot I had a wooden filter in my Savinelli, it swelled up with goop and I had no draw. Couldn't get it out. Finally a friend inserted a thin screw into the filter and we managed to pull it out with a pair of needlenose pliers. No more wooden filters.
I have a Falcon International, too, and tried the paper filters. Left the rest in the box after using a few. . . . agree with you that "things get kinda gross in there." I've found that the best solution to hot smoke or tongue bite and other maladies, is improving my ability to slow smoke, still a work in progress. For me, filters did interfere with the taste, but that's just me.
Reminds me of some of the weird contraptions that my violin students put on their fiddles to "make them more comfortable." In the cases where they work, there a dozen where they don't. Where they do work, there is usually a physical criteria present, sloping shoulders and very long necks being the most common. And the best ones are the simplest.

You're welcome! I don't claim my experiences to be a universal truth or some kinda secret Masonic knowledge, just "This is how it works for me" but it may work differently for you since everyone's mouth chemistry is different.

I haven’t decided whether to smoke Balkan Sobranie or Special Latakia Flake tonight. I’m going to load it into this old cob: it was my first pipe. My sister bought it for me from Walgreens when I was 15 along with Borkum Riff cherry. I I snuck outside and smoked it in the dark hahaha. I still have that old cob so I’m using it tonight 24 years later.
