A Belated Christmas Story
Not usually up this early but did an early crash last night. My friend Kevin, who I introduced to pipes and my collection of pipe buddies a few months ago, became quite interested in my pipe project. He asked me a few weeks ago if I had found a Bulldog yet. "Nope, yet to be done. Can't seem to find a Bulldog I like in my price range." As you know, these new acquisitions are not high ticket items. Just can't afford another Pete, Sav or Brigham.
That's all I heard about it until a week or so later. Kevin is a mechanic, and the top gunsmith up here in Prince George. He's also a great hunting and fishing buddy. Has been for years. He's also extremely observant, and noticed I'd been smoking a lot of lat lately, not only for blending analysis but cuz lat is easy on the tongue when the bite occurs. Kevin became intensely interested in my penchant for mixing my own tobacco blends. I concocted one he especially liked, and I made him ten jars of it as a gift.
As an adjunct to this, he began his own collection, going the vintage route. He also collects vintage rifles, muzzleloaders, and shotguns, so the estate pipe thing made perfect sense.
A few days ago, he presented me with my Bulldog. He also figured that, as the pipe was used both for smoking lat (which I like, btw) and analysis of my English and Balkan blending efforts, that a P-Lip was the way to go. No iddding. I've found Petes especially gifted in their interpretation of Latakia.
When he gave me the pipe, he said, "Gord, you've given us a 24-7 Mancave, opened up your larder, your picnic table cult, taken us all fishing . . . . hey man, it's my pleasure!"
It's good to have great friends. And, I think, the perfect post for me to end the year on this thread. I'll be opening 2026 tomorrow with another pipe and story that'll hopefully warm the cockles of the hearts of those of you following this collection thing of mine.
And, yes, now I have a Bulldog. And what a beauty it is!!
