On the shelf tonight: A. de Fussigny VS (Cellar Blend). A traditional French cognac house from the Cognac region, founded in the 19th century. No flashy marketing here — just a classic approach and honest production. This VS is exactly what it claims to be: young eaux-de-vie, minimum legal aging, no tricks. On the nose — grapes, light vanilla, a touch of oak. Alcohol is present but not harsh. The palate is straightforward, slightly dry, clean and balanced. Not a showstopper, but also far from disappointing. As a pipe companion it works well, especially with non-aromatic blends. Not for deep contemplation, but for a relaxed evening: pipe, tobacco, and a glass of honest French cognac.

I've passed the half way mark of this bowl of year 2018 D&R Windsail in a smooth straight family era 1950s Barling 313 T.V.F. EXEXEL pot with a black ebonite saddle stem. This type of blend is perfect for a pot because you won't have to worry much about the edges of the tobacco in the burning chamber not burning.

The ferals are in and have eaten. Harry the Hairy was in the den and decided to eat more, but Tomato the Brave was guarding the entrance to the kitchen, so he was reluctant to go eat. I called Harry to come to me, and I had planned to pick him up and take him to eat. Tomato saw that and came over and plopped down on my feet to stop that from happening. Harry changed course and started walking to the kitchen. When he did that, Tomato tried to get up to go after Harry, but I held Tomato down so that wouldn't happen. Harry went to the couch to lay down, but Molly Danger was close to him on m'lady's chair hissing and growling at him. Harry was very scared, so I took Molly to the bedroom where she hissed Daisy the Feral Princess who was laying on my side of the bed waiting for me to go to sleep.

I went over to Harry and gave him some attention to soothe his nerves. After a couple of minutes, he got up and went back to the kitchen to eat. Tomato walked in there to see what's going on, but I got him to go back to the den, and he's working out his angst on a catnip sock. Harry decided to hide under the kitchen table. Sleepy Suzy is in the kitchen eating now, and hopefully, this will be the last bit of drama before I go to bed.

Last smoke of the day is year 2016 D&R Two Timer Gold in a smooth straight late 1970s Charatan Special 4148DC Reg. No. 203573 pot with a black double comfort vulcanite stem. Tomato the Brave wanted out, and I reluctantly let him. It's in the 20s outside, and even though the heated cat house will keep him warm, I wish he'd stay inside like the other two ferals are doing. I've been reading about various subjects for a few hours, and will continue doing that while this bowl lasts.

Got together with a friend last evening for a smoking session at a tobacconist halfway between our two towns, and cracked open one of the tins that my Secret Santa sent me, Benjamin Hartwell Chesdin Mixture from 1997. It was sublime! The Latakia had rounded to a delicious softness that was perfectly integrated with the VA, the retrohale was smooth as could be with no irritating sharpness. The tin note is wonderful with a lightly sweet top note, and the moisture was good to pack and go right out of the fresh tin. Thank you, Santa!

Part way through this bowl of year 2024 Edward G. Robinson's Pipe Blend in a 2014 Basil Meadows smooth slight bend squashed tomato with an aluminum band and a black pearl acrylic stem in the military mount style. All the cats have been fed. Ice water and bergs is my drink.

Love that pipe. I had to look up Basil Meadows. It looks like he's retired from the craft.
