Fed all the ferals except for the absent Abner the Eager, and am close to finishing this bowl of Wilke No. 72 in a pre-1974 dark brown straight Larus & Brother Co. Signature billiard with a nickel band and a tapered black vulcanite stem with the initials LCR on the top of the stem. This blend was smoked by Walter Cronkite. Low calorie snacking follows this smoke. Ice water and bergs is my drink.

Enjoyed a tasty golden delicious apple, and smoked a bowl of year 2020 D&R Penhooker Silver in a straight smooth brown undated pre-Republic Peterson Shamrock 263 Canadian with a nickel band and a tapered black p-lip stem. Finished work for the day, and have to make up for some lost time cleaning pipes.

Gawith Hoggarth Jamaican Flake (AKA Rum Flake) in my trusty Morgan Bones Milan tonight.puffy

IMG20240410134034~2.jpg

For this week's blend of the week I decided go with G.H. Jamaican Flake, since we've got a hot and humid week coming up as summer winds down here, so something with a bit of a Caribbean flair sounded nice; and nice it is! Gawith always makes really pleasantly smooth and well rounded flakes, and this one is no exception.

The rum flavor is actually pretty subdued to my palate, it's mostly a mellow Virginia/Burley mix with a bit of licorice and just a tiny hint of rum that I only notice on the aftertaste, but it is an enjoyable flavor. I wouldn't call it an aromatic personally, since the main flavor is the tobacco and the casings aren't much more than a subtle condiment, it's more of a VaBur with a little something extra.

There's no Lakeland essence at all to be found in this recently produced batch, which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your preferences, and the nicotine content in this one (as with most G.H. flakes) is deceptively high. It's one of those blends that really sneaks up on you, where you don't feel anything at all until about 25 minutes in when it all hits you at once. This one definitely requires a bit of respect and caution when enjoying, though it isn't quite as punchy as something like Irish Flake or 1792. Still, I'd take it slow and easy until you know how it sits with you.

I'll have to wait and see how I feel about Rum/Jamaican Flake after smoking it every day for the next week, but my initial impressions are that it's quite good and I won't have any objections at all to this being an everyday smoke for awhile!

New guy here making his first entry. Just bought a tin of Nightcap from my local B&M. I’m not sure if age helps Nightcap at all but the tin is dated January of 2023. Has some age to it already. I’ve read many post and watched quite a few videos that talk very highly about this stuff and now I understand why. It’s definitely a feast for the senses isn’t it. The tin note alone brings back early childhood memories of going camping when I was a cub-scout/boy-scout and learning how to make a fire. As far as the taste I found hints of everything we did that first time building a fire. From what pine needles smell like when thrown into a fire to what mesquite smells and tastes like when used to cook a piece of meat. I was floored. Had no idea smoking tobacco could be as savory as a perfectly charred piece of steak cooked on an open mesquite wood fire. Meat drippings and all.

Daisy the Feral Princess and Tomato the Brave are inside eating wet and dry food. Harry the Hairy is outside eating dry food. Abner the Eager is whenever he goes at night. Every time I see those li'l fellas, they cry out to me with joy, especially Harry. Sam the Scamp used to do the same thing. Anyway, I'm half way through this bowl of year 2012 Astley’s No. 55 in a 1978 straight smooth brown BBB Silver Mounted 522 pot with a silver band and a tapered black vulcanite stem. I'll end the day with this smoke. Reading baseball box scores.

I ran out of my usual Golden Harvest Yellow RYO tobacco and won't be able to pick up more until tomorrow, so I decided to get brave and roll up some D&R Ryback to see how it would work as a cigarette; since the tin note is not all that dissimilar to the old pouches of Drum RYO tobacco. The short version of the story is that I'm definitely not craving nicotine anymore, but I feel like my lungs are going to be regretting that decision for quite some time. 😅
