After a busy week carrying out the wife's orders I'm finally relaxing with some booze and baccy. A dram or three of whisky with a very tasty bowl of Argento Natural Virginia/Burley in the Charatan 610 de luxe.

I'd like to I ask you guys in The States a question about one of your corncob pipes that I'm thinking of buying but I'm a bit put off by what looks like a burn mark around the centre of the shank.
Is this normal and if it is what's the reason for it?

Thanking you for any assistance in this matter.
It's something Gen. MacArthur did to each shank on the pipes he received from Missouri Meerschaum, according to the company, so they continue the tradition on this particular model of pipe. FWIW, I find this model very unwieldy and impractical. Depends on what you're looking for, of course, but I find the Country Gentleman, the apple Diplomat, and the Pride far more manageable.

Relaxing after a wonderful salad, wild caught catfish and green beans dinner with strawberries and cherries for dessert. I'm a quarter of the way through this bowl of year 2012 Rolando’s Own in a smooth straight early ‘60s Lane era “William Conrad” Charatan Executive Extra Large stretch apple with diagonal channel cuts on the lower right and left of the bowl along with a black vulcanite double comfort saddle stem.
You smoke that pipe a lot Jim , must be a nice pipe

Part way through this bowl of year 2013 Stonehaven in a straight sandblasted pre-transition Barling Exel 249 Fossil T.V.F. black billiard with a silver banded military mount and a black ebonite tapered stem. Community Coffee is brewing. Rain rather fiercely outside.

It's not just a great smoker, but it has a lot of meaning to me. I wanted a William Conrad Charatan for over thirty years, and never found one. One of my best friends, who's a forum member here, knew that and gave it to me in Jan. of 2016. Then, the next year, he gave me the other Conrad pipe that he owned. They are precious not just because of my long desire for a Conrad Charatan, but also because they were presents from my friend. There's no value you can possibly place on the confluence of those circumstances that led to me owning them. Not many people have friends as generous, considerate and thoughtful as I do.
