I found Magic Mountain tough going too and I don't think I ever finished it.It's a tough start, but once I got past the first /18th of the book, it gets better.

I've had to put it down for a while. There were some great cigar discussions, but Uggg... why is this on lists for best 20th century novels? Working my way through Das Kapital, The Myth of Sisyphus, and The Essential Basho.
One of the best WWII histories ever written and a favorite of mine. The film was great too. Better than The Longest Day IMHO.Cornelius Ryan, A Bridge Too Far.
