Do you have a favourite period? While I enjoy and appreciate the Impulse years, especially if you follow the logical progression of what he was doing with the saxophone and where he was taking it, the Atlantic period seems most magical to me.

Ditto for the Atlantic Period. My Dad was a performing jazz bassist (Dub Ericcson Orchestra). The Trane was his favorite sax player. He used to say that Coltrane never blew a "wet" note in his life (for wet notes examples just listen to Junior Walker). Glad to know there are other aficionados out there.

I should add that, among current sax players, I consider Mike Phillips the closest to Coltrane's technique.
Co!trane's duet album with Thelonius Monk is also one of the great jazz albums. Get a digital version if you don't already have it. Cheers!
