Been on a David Bowie 1974 live kick. Sweet Thing-Candidate is a masterpiece and one of his best songs, and gets played on repeat here lately. 2nd song in the film.

Stumbled on Red Hot Chili Peppers when their first album started hitting the alternative radio in 1984, with "Baby Appeal." Love that song! Whole album is a masterpiece, imho. Spinning through it this evening. Hard to pick a favorite track, but it just might just be "Green Heaven."

To my mind John Hartford (1937 -2001) was a modern incarnation of Samuel Clemens, except that Mr. Hartford wrote songs (e.g., "Gentle on My Mind") whereas Mr. Clemens wrote stories. Still, they both told tales, were steam-boat pilots, and had more than a bit of the Mississippi River thoroughly mixed into their blood.
