Stumbled on Red Hot Chili Peppers when their first album started hitting the alternative radio in 1984, with "Baby Appeal." Love that song! Whole album is a masterpiece, imho. Spinning through it this evening. Hard to pick a favorite track, but it just might just be "Green Heaven."

The Lower Forty of Hill Country
To my mind John Hartford (1937 -2001) was a modern incarnation of Samuel Clemens, except that Mr. Hartford wrote songs (e.g., "Gentle on My Mind") whereas Mr. Clemens wrote stories. Still, they both told tales, were steam-boat pilots, and had more than a bit of the Mississippi River thoroughly mixed into their blood.
