That is what is being debated in Congress. Some want to give a flat $1200 to $2000 and others want to provide up to 4 weeks of income equivalent to a person's net pay after taxes. And there are other proposals.

Let's hope they actually do something rather than debate the finer points and special interest agendas ad nausea to the point that Congressional action would be moot.

This kind of selfishness, and stupidity will result in the death of others.
People have an unlimited capacity for denial, and I think that speaks more to a refusal to face fears than anything else.

So Congress remains deadlocked over a few sticking points, which can largely be defined as how much help goes to workers who have been laid off, and what conditions should be placed on businesses seeking loans.

Certain folks want an enhanced form of unemployment that will cover up to 4 months of salary for laid off workers, while others don't. Some want conditions for companies seeking government assistance that makes it mandatory for said companies to use the money to pay workers and not to use it for stock buybacks or executive raises, while others want the loans given with no strings attached. And there's still back and forth over oversight and accountability for decisions about loans. Some want oversight and accountability, and others want none.

There's also some talk among politicians about ending the quarantine after 15 days, even though contagion jumped markedly when Hong Kong tried the same thing. Why not pursue proven failure. Who cares what epidemiologists and others medical experts have to say on the matter. What the fuck to they know. They don't have to worry about getting re-elected. Just put out enough media spin, and nobody will question it.

People can just go about their business, wearing those surgical masks that do nothing. If they get sick they'll just have to tough it out since there isn't adequate capacity to provide care.

So on Saturday Illinois was put on shelter in place yet I was told come to work. We are going to take an additional week to shut the plant down. I understand the need to "ramp down" production uncured rubber actually has a shelf life. But it also makes me question how my company is able to stay running, Its amazing what politics can do especially in the most corrupt state in the union

What shocked me on Sunday when I went out was the casual attitude of other shoppers, not keeping their distance, handling items bare-handed and putting them back on the shelves. This kind of selfishness, and stupidity will result in the death of others.
Unless you go to the store in a hazmat suit, it's just impossible to avoid this. I go and touch things bare-handed: I then just have to watch it so as not to touch my face or stuff that I'm gonna take to my face or mouth (such as my pipe) with my hands till I've gotten to the car and have disinfected them with hand sanitiser. Yes, we could refrain from touching stuff we're not wanting to buy, but sometimes you have to flip boxes or jars around to read labels, or to make sure the sugar bag doesn't have a hole underneath, or to make sure the onions are firm and not rotten.... endless list. No point in putting on latex gloves to go to the shop because others aren't doing so (and NO, we DON'T need police enforcing more BS) and you'll end up bringing home something many others have previously handled—from the packagers at the production place, to lorry drivers, to shelvers, to customers.

Best you can do is have a spray bottle filled with 99% isopropanol or hydrogen peroxide and spray the stuff you bought when you bring it home, before opening the packages, and wash your vegetables thoroughly and cook them properly.

The thing(s) getting to me are friends and family who think they have to come over and get 12 inches away to gleefully tell you they feel terrible. And of course being told masks will not help me at all, so give them to medical personnel to protect them. I still wonder what the hell a 1,000 check will do me if there is no food to buy in the first place.

I do so love reading about all of the dire circumstances for us to yet to experience. For many the sky is obviously falling. I have more faith in mankind weathering this wee bump in the road. Third world, and some western, countries will have some problems as they aren't capable of fast action, lacking a solid infrastructure as they do. Italy is a prime example. No infrastructure means shortages and slow responses. Sure the US has it's panicky politicians but, the required infrastructures are in place and basically operated by calm, thinking individuals who aren't concerned about reelection. Very similar to how the private sector reacted to WWll. Do what's required now and make required adjustments/corrections when circumstances permit. There'll plenty of time assessing blame later. I'm glad the "hand wringers" are usually too timid to be in positions of responsibility.

Attend to what you can and ignore the circumstances you have no control over. Life as we know it isn't particularly threatened.

Food? We in the USA have more than enough. Plenty of glitches in the supply train, due to hoarding and panic buying. That will eventually dissipate unless the Yahoos (the Jonathon Swift ones, not the web presence) somehow take over.

So if we limit the people out and about to the essential workers, that list would get pretty long fast...

Grocery stores, and their essential support:

Banks, paper box makers, plastic bag makers, gas stations for the workers cars, all food production, IT techs for the store software, maintence, companies that make maintence materials, warehouses, all grocery frieght and those who load it.

Shit loads of shoppers coughing and sneezing on each other.

Thats just one of the essential sectors, look how many people are behind the curtain.. now think of the rest ?

The only way to contain this is for people to really stay home, that cant happen! It would take MREs being dropped on your front step.

So heres the 2 outcomes ;

We move on and let this thing run its course.

Or

We lock people down in their houses and depend on the national gaurd to bring us everything, and maintain our essential needs. For months...

Gas pumps, credit card machines, take out food, mail, packages, hospitals, doctors offices, dentist, power compaines, water companies, plumbers, electricans, funeral homes, ALL door knobs, ect... these things are all compromised. Try avoiding those while still operating essential business.

I am OK with either I can do without its funny how the people who made fun of those who bought a little extra or grew a little extra are now asking how to get by

Its not all about getting by though, our lives are (or should be) a future for our children.. this sky is falling, shut down everything mentailty is going to fuck their future right up. Cool heads dont prevail when everybody's trying to figure out how to get a piece of the bailout.

But hey, you cant beg for money if you try to just move forward business as usual.

I find comfort in the small things myself, my wife and I lived a year with no tv.
But,
I'm not willing to wish an amish style life on my kids just because the news said it was the thing to do. It's bigger than 300 cans of beans.. its about normalcy, striving to hold on to something. So that they have more than we did.

I totally agree I don't want Amish but I want my kids to have more skills than video games they have them and play them but I want them to earn them and have a good work ethics

Well, yes, you're sending them the message that when the poo hits the fan they should hide under the bed and wait for the goverment to rescue them.
