They work well but the slightly bigger ones found at the dollar store are even better for outdoors, increase stability and possible wind gusts. And if your suave, you can even convince the significant other to carry it for you!

Leather loop has come in handy last few days while rest of my pipes were stored away. Now I'm beginning to bring them out again, most of the just rest on top of pipe sock. Leather loop is mostly used for pipes in queue for next day and while I'm smoking out on front porch. Leather and brass, can't beat that. Unless it's ostrich leather and copper.. Better yet gator and ti..

Make your own? Not that hard if you have even minor skill set and some scrap lumber laying around.
I' have 1 of those leather loop stands, and only because it came with a Peterson that i ordered. My Racks I also make myself.
I do use the leather loop occasionally for taking pics.

I got a nice rack I made in the living room, holds 14...not very portable though.

This 1 I made a while back from a piece of briar that was no good for pipe making due to a major flaw, and a couple mini crossbow bolts. Handcarved skull on the face, green felt lining the bottom. 0501210901.jpg
