Technology makes us stupid. Each generation understands less and less because they rely on a technology that they don't fully understand. This generation thinks that smart phones will last forever, but we all thought that VCRs were here forever also. Once satellites are all knocked out of their orbits, and these people have no idea how to use a map, or write things by hand, or even how to calculate or convert things.
AI and self driving cars will be the end of us.

Global warming... the idea that I should be saving this world for the morons that will follow me? I don't even understand, and they are doing a shit job of selling me on the idea. Someone too lazy and stupid to drive a car? I won't even let my wife drive me, why would I turn my life over to a computer? Let the place burn. Go pet a bear. puffy

Interesting that a thread about being trapped in an elevator morphed into a “rural vs urban” debate.
One of the “benefits” of a career as a professional artist is that you’re a perpetual outsider. So you have no tribe and you get to watch your fellow Sapiens making up all manner of tribes to align with.
Surprise! Assholes and fools exist in every environment. Predators and prey exist in every environment. The style is different. The substance isn’t.
Stuck in an elevator or stuck in a snowdrift, you’re still stuck.

It is a truth that was said with sarcasm. But, if you think about it. cell phones are designed to only last until the next new phone comes out, and if we ever go to war with a first world nation, the first thing I would do if I were them is knock out our satellites. That would leave this generation in a stand still stupor.

And, pretty soon more and more people will rely on AI for their thinking and creativity. I just talked to a lady who used AI on her vacation to decide what she should be doing. WTF? The more we rely on these things the more we give up of ourselves. I'm no luddite, but I can see what is going on around me with clarity.

I'm sure the sight of a city slicker being violently mauled by a wild animal must be quite the hilarious romp for you seasoned country dudes.
No no no... seeing anyone who gets mauled by a bear while taking a selfie is equally as hilarious. It's not just city slickers, h aha.

This is very much like when those from the country come down to London and end up under a bus because they've tried to cross the road too early. Take yourself off to the centre of the city on any given day, and at least somewhere you will find a group of city slickers, bedecked in pinstripe suits and braces, rolling on the floor in fits of laughter at the sight of a stricken country dweller under the front wheels of a bus. Or better yet, iwhen they arrive in one of the major railway stations and because they lack any street smarts, find themselves quikly releaved of all their possessions by some enterprising young addict. That's particularly hilarious, because like the slickers who get mauled by a bear, they have singularly failed to understand the ferral nature of the place they have just arrived in, and end up paying for it in the most horrendous way. That'll teach em, and we'll all get a great laugh along the way lol
Don’t cross in front of a two story bus!

Back home and ensconced in my 7,000 acre safe place. This thread has definitely taken off and I see some pretty robust lines have been drawn and umbrage taken with regard to city Vs country and dog turds......

Here is the back end and why I got so pissed off. 3 lifts in a 5 star establishment, 1 service elevator 2 guest elevators one of which was already out of service. We have stayed in this establishment 14/16 months ago and one of the elevators was out of commission then too, you can see where this is going. So the working elevators were under pressure and ultimately another one failed with me and 9 other souls in it. Having never been stuck in one before I seized the phone and spoke directly to the lift company Otis and was walked through a trouble shooting protocol with no success and was then told 3 hours for a service technician. I decided to expedite the matter and called the fire dept who arrived and proceeded to work their magic.

Now once outside I thought I'd find the hotel staff waiting but instead I was greeted by a junior with a bottle of water. I asked if the shift manager knew about the incident and young lady said he did. I walked down to the front desk and asked to speak to the said manger who arrived 10 minutes later. I asked about elevator maintenance and why there seems to be one always out of commission. He responded that he didn't know and that "it wasn't his job to get the repairs executed". He then asked if I had called the fire dept to which I said yes. His response to this was, "I wished you hadn't done that as now it's a paperwork nightmare with an offical call out from emergency services", he would of preferred dealing with the problem in house, this boiled my piss. He said we had everything under control and we were watching you all on CCTV. I said oh really and did you have the capacity to communicate with us as well to which he replied they did. So the management were sitting in a control room watching us sweat and didn't speak to us at all, nothing. No relay of information, no help is on its way, no stay calm we have it under control, nothing. To me this is gross incompetence and I will be lodging formal complaints and following up because I now have reason to believe that maintenance, scheduled or otherwise is being over looked on what is a critical piece of infrastructure in a 17 story building and it is a workplace health and safety risk at best or a complete failure of duty of care at worst.

Now to the dumb as dog shit reference, it pertains to the fact that I personally believe that if you turned off the internet and shut down the cell towers tomorrow, vast amount's of city folk now lack the ability to critically think for themselves. Urban areas have had their hands held for so long by every level of government and business that the ability to problem solve or be pro active is nearly lost . Our whole time in Hobart all we saw where people glued to their phones whilst walking, sitting, dinning, driving, exercising et al. We did not receive one smile, not one hello or hi mate, just people on a treadmill like a rat going around and around. The phone issue is a mental illness because there is no other explanation and the lack of outgoing human connection that comes from that is a society that is in decline. The English language has morphed into grunts and gesticulations and as referenced above the deflection or lack of desire to remedy issues or deflect onto others is real.

Rant is definitely over but its my rant and if I've pissed you off get over it!

A small suburban city close by called Decatur had lost all cell service for two days, and I KID YOU NOT, there were more traffic accidents, fights, and the police reported chaos for over 24 hours. The news made it sound like they had resorted to cannibalism, and one of my daughters lives there and said it was horrible. They still make phone books, but no one would be able to find one to look up a number to call from a landline. And, no one could remember a phone number nowadays anyways. Most don't even know their own numbers.
Take out satellites and cell towers, and you would cripple us as a nation. Hell, kids now even use textbooks from online. Who came up with all of this, also set up the cards for catastrophe. Total catastrophe.
Hell, most people don't even know how to meet other people without a computer or smart phone. Kids think it is perverse to approach someone they don't know and start a conversation. I'm not kidding. Society would break down fast.
