Puts a whole new meaning to the religion of pipe smoking. I always just read the descriptions and reviews at Smokingpipes - they've never done me wrong.

I'm speaking for myself only; but I don't necessarily post reviews for other people. My reviews are primarily for my own benefit, I can't remember what I thought of a blend I smoked one tin of, seven years ago. If you find that you have the same feelings towards certain blends that I have reviewed as I do then our taste buds may indeed be in sync, of course the opposite is also true, if you positively love several blends I can't stand then you might want to try a blend I disliked. Sure, there are a lot of guys on the site who think they are the next Tad Gage, but not me, I review for myself and my reviews are not objective, they are opinion---MY OPINION!

As I don't think I have ever seen that reviewer (yet) I will not say anything about him/her. However that site has many, many good reviews and reviewers. But I have always said that It drives be nuts when someone reviews anything that they hate. I would not review a va/per blend, as I dont like them. So when I see "LET ME START OUT BY SAYING I DON"T LIKE AERO'S" I usually skip it, cause if you dont like them, then why are you reviewing Holiday Spirit?
I know. I feel the same way, and it was my frustration at separating the good reviews from the bad reviews that spurred me to post this rant (and I admit that's what it is, and for that I do apologize!).
I don't know how you missed this guy though. If you go to the new reviews, he has been posting at quite a clip in recent weeks. The guy is like a giant turd that just won't flush.
'Nuff said on this topic (by me, anyway).

Well said Philo. And I get it. Your reviews are subjective, but at least they are articulate and well-reasoned!
Edit: I lied above when I said "'Nuff said"

I go to TR like Eric, to find out more about a blend. I like the site for that reason, since my knowledge of tobacco blends is limited, despite the fact that I have been a pipe smoker now for over four decades.
I guess I just never really took the time to ferret it all out. When I run into a review that seems either out of left field or out to lunch, I just move on.
Some of the very reasons I never post a review anywhere is that 1) I don't feel qualified; 2)I really don't know enough about tobaccos and processing; and 3) I'm no William Serad or Tad Gage. Serad spoiled me forever. I read his reviews and bought everything he "highly recommended."
And when I do go to TR, I look for names found here, because I trust them. I also look up those reviewers Harris mentioned in another thread.
And, Peck, I've had some very religious experiences while smoking my pipe. It might not be the same religion as the gentleman you mention is experiencing, but very spiritual nonetheless.

My problem with the gentleman's reviews comes not from the theological undertones, but the terminology and analogies. I am still trying to figure out the meaning of, "dropped a testicle..." in reference to a certain tobacco. I am used to a nutty flavor, but come on now.

No one has ever accused me of not having alot to say, but hopefully when I speak or write I have some knowledge of the subject.
I am absolutely no good at all reviewing tobaccos, so I rely on sites such as this forum and TR.
TR mostly for the blend contents-to know whether it is an English (I reserve separate pipes for Eng) or a VA or va/per.
The reviews entertain me-that's all. When there is a review by a jerk, I just page down. (haven't seen any reviews by the religious fellow, but I'm not on the site that often)

A recent study on Internet product reviews (you can Google it) shows that close to 50% of the negative reviews left on sites like JC Penney, LL Bean, Lands End, and others, are fake.
I have no reason to think that the same is not true on pipe tobacco sites.
The first sentence of some reviewers clue you in to their bias, and render the rest of the review useless.

I like go go on the site while smoking a blend I like and reading the reviews that sound something like " I have never smoked a pipe before, but here's my opinion anyway" they make me chuckle. Your only options are to laugh it off or get mad, and judging by other posts I have seen of you peck, your much better suited to laugh it off.
With that said, I do know what it's like being new and confused and trying to figure out what kind of tobacco I like and I would not suggest anyone to make a decision based on that site. Personally most of my choices come from members recommendations on this site. Look at you Roth, you have helped me choose anni kake, neiwsmier 403, and a couple other blends in my cellar.

I like and use that site often. However, I do skip over many of the reviews as some are not at all useful, and learned quickly the reviewers in whom I trust.

Surlysoul and Phil22 have it down. I pay attention to reviewers whose tastes are similar to my own. I pay a lot of attention to Pipestud's reviews. Although Stud and I have some different likes and dislikes, it's rare that I like anything he has strongly panned.
If somebody says "I don't usually smoke (the sort of blend they are reviewing)", I ignore the review if they pan the blend. If they like it, however, that's worth noting.

I'm glad it's not just me that thinks that "Gus Tation" guy is ruining the site lately.

The internet has given every doofus on the planet the right to express his opinions and views as poorly and as loudly as possible. In the old days a guy like Gus Tation would just be put down.

I actually have the same opinion when people review anything. My favorte black tea I get from adaigo.com and is called Golden Monkey. It has a very high rating however some jackass gives it a negative review saying "I gave it 1 star because I do not like black tea." ARE YOU SERIOUS. How does this review help ANYONE????

After all the whinging about this guy's reviews, I finally hunted some up. Really? Sure he leaves a religious "signature", yes his writing is pretty bad. But really? Ruining the whole site experience single-handed? Sensitive much? It can be mildly annoying but that's what coping skills are for. Maybe the 20 or so ones I read weren't representative of his "body of work" but I do find that hard to believe.
Ruining the site...sure, if you're hyper-sensitive to any reference to religion or to bad writing. Absolutely if you have an inability to ignore something you know you'll hate. Those tend to indicate deeper problems but what do I know.
Peck I hope you don't mind me quoting Aleister Crowley.
The supreme satisfaction is to be able to despise one's neighbor and this fact goes far to account for religious intolerance. It is evidently consoling to reflect that the people next door are headed for hell.
Should the meaning change if the last word is heaven?

Nice job wrapping religion and politics into one thread by the way, I'm impressed.
