I've burnt the hell out of my tongue with churchwardens too! It takes a while to get it right.
I used to think that. Now decades later and many smokes under my belt, every flavored blend I smoke tastes like it smells. Less smoke produced equals more flavor tasted.Guess what - American aeros rarely taste like they smell!
Same thing happened to me: pipes opened up to me the world of flavour, though I still struggle with cigars.cigarettes taste pretty good after smoking pipes for awhile. i can actually pick out sweet va in marlboro red. tasty.
^^^This.Another thing, that I had to understand, before I had my "aha-experience" was, that one does not have to produce a big amount of smoke, when smoking a pipe. I fact, one does barely see some smoke, when smoked that slow, that the tastes start to really come through.

Neat. Then I'm not doing anything wrong, aside from smoking them every blue moon.it took a while before I could pick out the flavors. I’m sure some people can taste nuances immediately, but I imagine they’re few and far between. I’d wager most of us just taste ‘tobacco’ and go from there, getting better as we continue.

I do believe the OP has left the building.
EDIT: Fixed Capitalization in Title - Bob
I've tried pipe smoking for the first time today, but I couldn't taste the flavor of the tobacco ( captain black cherry) it smells very nice but when I smoke it, it just tastes the same as cigarettes.
Am I misssmoking it or this is the taste of the tobacco
I call this place a civilized BBQ, not a dinner party...but all very friendly, respectful.
It’s cool to say hi in the new folks section. Most get warmly welcomed. Welcome! ?
