So, I think this was a drive posting by to see if he could get us going. He makes 1 post and never shows back up other than to see what the responses were.

IMHO, a first post should be in Introductions and should be limited to the New Member's area.

I am a member of the Tesla Owner's Group and we get these all the time, usually something derogatory like "I just bought my car and the battery died, what do I do?"

Just Saying... puffy

Guess what - American aeros rarely taste like they smell!
I used to think that. Now decades later and many smokes under my belt, every flavored blend I smoke tastes like it smells. Less smoke produced equals more flavor tasted.

The OP hasn’t posted since early December, so that might be the end of it except for new smokers who are lurking and reading threads like this.

My biggest regret as a new smoker was to start with an aromatic. I recently encouraged a new fellow smoker who is struggling with the same advice... get some Carter Hall. The stuff will practically smoke itself. Then start making forays from there and eventually try some aromatics.

Welcome from Mississippi! Keep on trying new techniques and new blends. Most people don't have a good experience with their first smoke. Just keep trying and you will find what you like.

Same thing happened to me: pipes opened up to me the world of flavour, though I still struggle with cigars.

My experience was the exact opposite. I started with cigars back in the mid 90’s, and it took a while before I could pick out the flavors. I’m sure some people can taste nuances immediately, but I imagine they’re few and far between. I’d wager most of us just taste ‘tobacco’ and go from there, getting better as we continue.

Years later when I began pipes I knew I was in for something special but after I learned how to properly smoke a pipe — wow! Cigars paled in comparison (MHO of course). I still enjoy a good stick, especially in the dog days of summer. Most especially ‘dessert’ sticks after a nice meal.

Neat. Then I'm not doing anything wrong, aside from smoking them every blue moon.

You can print out a flavor wheel for cigars. You’ve probably seen them. Mainly with cigars I get a lot of earth, moss/grass/vegetable, wood (pine, cedar, oak), leather, citrus, pepper (black, cayenne) etc. ie: base flavors. With a good dessert stick I can often pick out chocolate, black coffee, marshmallow, caramel, pastry, etc.

If anything, the pipe has sharpened my ability to pick out flavors from cigars. Like knowing trig and then going back to a geometry problem.

And not at all meant as an insult to you cigar guys — I am one! I’ve still got well over 250 sticks, nice and aged. ?

EDIT: Fixed Capitalization in Title - Bob

I've tried pipe smoking for the first time today, but I couldn't taste the flavor of the tobacco ( captain black cherry) it smells very nice but when I smoke it, it just tastes the same as cigarettes.
Am I misssmoking it or this is the taste of the tobacco

From one cigarette smoker to another- all aromatics tasted the same to me (I.e. flavourless) and I found it hard to find any significant differences in flavour in straight virginias. They all just tasted like very good quality cigarettes- certainly nicer than my usual Drum Blue, but not blowing my head off.

Then I smoked Squadron Leader. That was a game changer.

My advice would be to try something punchier. I fell in love with English blends, but I also really enjoyed VaPers. Give them a go.

I have a different response to this. Cigarettes taste like tobacco. Good cigarettes taste like Virginia, and if they have a bit of Burley, Perique, Kentucky or Oriental in them you taste that too.

So yes, smoking a pipe tastes like cigarettes. Tobacco tastes like tobacco. It might not be for everyone.

I’ve never been a cigarette smoker and hope never to be, but don’t most people smoke cigarettes for the fix and not the taste? Do those here who smoked cigarettes before taking to the pipe consume them differently now? Please excuse any assumptive tone of this reply.

I would also like to say I didn’t make my first post in the introduce yourself thread as I generally don’t believe in such a thing. I feel like forums are more like bars than let’s say a dinner party and when I enter a bar I haven’t been before I don’t exclaim “hello my name is Timmy and I’m here to drink!” but rather, hopefully politely ease into conversation. I do agree it’s rude to ask a question and not acknowledge the thoughtful replies.
