Enough with the self righteousness about eBay sales.

Self righteousness is all it is if you won't back up your complaints with readily available action.
That the thread has become unproductive is an understatement.

Well I started a real poop flinger with this thread didn't I? The whole point was really just to voice my displeasure that it sucks that I can't get some of my favorite blends because suddenly "poof!" people are selling them for a hell of a lot more than what they were worth just a few days ago. Many agree with me that it sucks. Of course, those sellers selling a tin of McClelland for a bazillion dollars have every right to do so. It doesn't mean we have to like it or agree with their practices. Personally I think it's lame that they're doing so, but whatever. In my opinion If more of these sellers were to put a bid up instead of a "buy it now" option, there'd be less anger about it... and there's still a pretty dang good chance the item is still going to sell for a ridiculous amount. Yeah. It makes me sick because I can't afford to blow 40, 50, 60, 70, 100 + dollars for a tin of McClelland. And there are a lot of others out there who can't either.
Looks like eBay has ended a bunch of auctions. If you are truly sick of the situation, report and complain about the auctions
Well why would I do that? There's a possibility that doing so, or others doing so, would cause Ebay to crack down on "collectible tin" sales and that would just screw it up for everyone. That's not cool either.

then turn around only to sell the tobacco on ebay and screw over other pipe smokers (a second time) makes that person a Giant D-bag! So if that's what you did, then I have no problem calling you or anyone else that did that a Giant D-bag and that person would be the lowest of the low.
Again, buying tobacco for your cellar to enjoy and maybe offering something up to another person (via trade or to sell at a reasonable price) who missed out is one thing. Buying tobacco only to turn around and make a profit is another. I'll let you decide what category you fit into.
I am proud to say that I fit in your "giant D-bag"category. You seem to imagine some utopic pipe smoking community where everybody just kicks down their rare tobacco to you, and then they are your buds. Well, reality check, some people buy stuff for less and sell it for more. If you have a problem with that I suggest that you never go to a store again. Do you think Wal Mart adds 2.00 in value to that can of soup that Campbells sold them for 20 cents? I think not. I have both benefited from and contributed to generosity on this particular forum. I have also bought tobacco specifically because I thought it would increase in value. People aren't so easily categorized as you imagine. Personally, I think disparaging perfect strangers both undermines the community spirit of this forum, and shows your true colors.
Your Wal-mart comparison is not even a comparison at all. You're talking about necessary items while I'm clearly talking about a luxury item. That argument is laughable.
My entire point (which you've seemed to miss several times now) is that a person last week or even today buys a bunch of McClelland tobacco for the sole purpose of turning around and selling it on ebay a couple days later for a huge profit; makes that person a Giant D-bag! Again, that's my opinion. It's one thing to take an older tin or a vintage tobacco that's been out of production for a while and sell it on ebay. As I said before I have no problem with that. My problem is that people have gone out and bought 25, 50, 100 tins or more of tobacco with no intent to smoke the tobacco at all, and to only sell it on ebay for a profit. Like I said that person takes away from others at the time of purchase at retail price, and then get screwed over again on the secondary market by having to pay a higher price. If you choose to do that, that's entirely your right; I just think it stinks and makes a person a Giant D-bag! Of course if a person wants to spend a stupid amount of money on a tobacco that's their choice as well. I just don't agree with it. Again, that's my opinion you're entitled to your own opinion.
Also, when I buy tobacco; I buy it to smoke and enjoy, and the thought of a tobacco increasing in value over a period of years never crosses my mind. I don't buy tobacco to sit in my cellar hoping that years down the road it will increase in value. I put it in my cellar to age and to enjoy it at a later time. You do you though. Good luck finding the next tobacco blend that you can flip for financial gain.

Sounds to me like there's a few out there cranky about the prices for whatever reason. The "report" of the auctionalerting EBAY to it's own rules is a virtual "Get off my lawn"

To posters that have been here for a long time. How is the board traffic as compared to a couple of years ago? The odd thing is that the loss of McClelland has caused a bit of a rift and controversy. That type of attention draws interest and could attract people to trying a pipe. Just sayin...
Oh BTW....1 post away from 100 and I will stop being obnoxious.

You have indeed Stan and if it wasn't for you I would never have had the pleasure of smoking many American blends

How is the board traffic as compared to a couple of years ago?

The traffic and types of people we have now is a good show of what diversity used to be like when I got here. I've learned not to completely trust the image that people give off on the forum. For some, it's like the Mardis Gras dancers putting on their masks, it gives them the freedom to express themselves in ways they would never do in reality. You meet them in real life to find out that the big bad Mack daddy badass drive a Prius and wears flip flops. Or, that the guy who you'd think wears cardigans and exudes wealth shows up to pipe shows wearing a foot long beard and a walker. Most of us are as genuine as we propose, but I'm just saying, some folks hide behind an avatar. There's one guy, who wants us to believe he's a turtle, but I have my suspicions. :puffy:
We still get the same newbie questions...

Which end goes in your mouth, how do I get the tobacco into this thing, I burned my tongue, and my mama won't let me smoke in the house... questions and posts.
We still have the same amount of bullying, one-up-manship, super nice guys, "get off my lawn" coots, super generous guys, and sometimes the occasional female posters. It seems pretty consistent.

A handful of moldy tins from C&D, a dented tin from P&C, a Peterson received without a draft hole, an uncut leaf found in a GLP blend; we have had myriads of hysterical threads. Losing McClellands is pretty bad, maybe the worst thing I have seen happen since smoking pipes, but for a forum for gentlemanly pipesmokers, we have more than our share of teenage cheerleader dramas.

I literally just made a posting on eBay w an absurd price just to see what’s really happening out there.

If it sells, it sells... the price is stupid high, but I’m almost more interested in the emails I’m about to receive, lol.

Will report back.
I think this whole eBay thing might be overblown.

I did post a sale at an outrageous amount, and while there were a few followers, no bites. (now deleted)

Then, to just try to get a handle on actual traffic, I've put up three individual posts with different tobaccos (with high buy it nows, though not quite as outrageous as the first).

In a day or so, I'm only getting like a dozen or so views on each.

So, I'm not sure there is really the traffic or feeding frenzy that people think there might be.

Based on completed sales, there have been several crazy ones, but not that many in the grand scheme of things.

The market will work itself out, as usual.

I was watching this ebay listing and just got a notice he has lowered his price 101.00. He was asking 750.00.

He looks to be trying to see what the market will bear for his aged MC, interesting.

LOL. When I started my experiment, I looked up the highest priced McC (which was this exact post) and raised it by $50 just to ensure it would be completely absurd.

Yours truly................ 8)

I don't really WANT or NEED to sell it, just fishing really. I've got multiples of these tins, and don't smoke it that often anymore. I didn't even think about selling them until I saw this thread.......... An opportunistic, deplorable, Giant D-bag, me.....................
