Received my Secret Santa, and shipped mine out today.

But I opened my match's box, not knowing what it was, so I had my wife empty it before I could see the contents. It was very well packaged! @Peter Turbo: I will reveal your gift on the first night of Hanukkah! Can't wait! Thank you!

(snip) ...last year, my recipient wasn’t a very active member on the forum, and I got another not so active member again this year.

No offense to anyone, but I personally wanted to gift someone, who is what we call one of the Regulars on this forum, the daily posters, family types.

@mikethompson Maybe next year we can have a list done this way, where we have a choice of who we want to gift from.

hmm 🤔
While I fully understand your sentiment, and certainly get wanting to bestow holiday gifts on acquaintances, part of what Secret Santa is all about is unequivocal generosity, giving generously to people whom you have probably never met and most likely don't even know, even on a tenuous, social media "friends" basis.

If you want to send a gift to a friend here on PipesMagazine, that's a great thing to do. I encourage you to do that.

My wording was bad, no I didn’t mean acquaintances, I meant, making sure certain gifts might reach the hands of those that would appreciate them, because we see them here as regular members, sharing their interests as Pipe Enthusiasts. So then we can send out special gifts this way, at this time of year. :)

I post this at my peril, but one of my other groups uses a free app called "Elfster" for managing Secret Santa lists. Might be a way to lighten the load next time around!

P.S. Do note that this is not criticism of how anything is currently being done, I'm just an engineer being an engineer... ;)

Scott, I thought about using a SS app when I was running the show, but really enjoyed setting up the pairings myself. There are also geographical, geopolitical and import/export restriction considerations to deal with, which an app can't do.

I 2nd this: Never put an engineer in charge, but absolutely take his advice on logistics.

I didn't get a photo of the outgoing package, but since I have to work when the post office is open: I just handed the box and address to my wife, she can be trusted to get the job done.

...Wait, did I tell her to bring it to the post office or bring it to the address?
  • By post it should arrive Thursday.
  • She could probably get it there in under 18 hours.

Yep!

In for the unequivocal generosity!!!

I’ll send to anyone dumb caring and giving enough to sign up knowing they are taking that risk!!!

May the spirit of the season and the mirth and merriment of this thread inspire those “irregular” members (or those with irregular members) to spread those forum wings and fly!
