But, $285 is alot of money for a tin that sold for under $20.

So what. If you sell your house do you think about what you paid when you set a price? Or about current market? If the former you’re over or under pricing, and either way the market will teach you a lesson. Seller’s basis is largely irrelevant.

Apple stock closed at $145.86/share today. Two years ago it was about $52. Anyone here want to sell me 100 shares now at $52?

Speculation is a very strange animal - and so is the current mess our 'Capitalistic Free Market Economy is in' - I can literally invent a new form of politics around it and many contemporary emotions will flair

In 5-7 years, it will be $350-400, easy. Collectibles always in demand.

Now I’ll argue slightly on the other side. Say you’re right; at $350-400 the tin would be a crappy investment. A 25% return over 5-7 years would barely keep until with inflation (especially the way prices are jumping now). And even that 3-4% per annum is before adjusting for product risk (most notably contamination or other damage due to a compromised seal).

But of course unless you’re a dealer purchases of pipes and tobaccos are, in most cases and on average, consumption expenditures not investments.

You guys all talk like $285 is a lot of money. Hell, just to take my whole family out to dinner costs me more than that. Hell, my wallet costs more than that. Chump change.
Too bad I still have 25 tons of that stowed away, and about 40 lbs of redcake. If someone wants one of my tins that I don’t want to let go of had better offer me way more than just $285.
You guys all loving on social security or something?

Social Security? Is that thing still around? Didn't count on it. But I wouldn't mind seeing my money back again with interest.

This is silly. When you're ready for depression, check the secondary for bourbon.
I was shocked to find out what my bottle of Pappy's 20 was going for on the secondary market. It took me 3 years to go through it and I only checked after I had finished the last dram.

Now there you go using logic. This is the 21st century and logic has no place in this day and age.
All joking aside, makes perfect sense.

That must be one special wallet!

$285 is alot of money to many people who are not on social security, and for many of those who are. It's not chump change, even for people who have paid for their house, and for their kids college tuitions, and who choose to have no debt. One can have the money to buy a new car with cash...but they might still say that a box of cigars or a spendy tin...is alot of money. It just is. I don't think that folks who choose not to spend the $ they do have that way are using poor judgement. And I don't think that folks who want that tin and spend $285 for it are misguided. But it's not chump change. But I will admit I'm a thrifty yankee. Peace.

Don't laugh- it may be funny to you and me but there are a lot of die hards out there - some are on this very website - I kind of wish I laid out a few grand back in 2015 to work on some decent points today - I'm not in the Tobacco business -
the fact is that it is a rarity. If you want it you can't go to too many places to get it. Means they can name the price more then I could for any of the tins in my meager cellar.

Maaaan you aren't lying. I live in Louisville so it was probably taken for granted. I think back to not so long ago - all the chances I had to buy a case or two of Pappy This or That. Would have been a retirement level investment. Even some of the more common ones I've seen jacked up lately. Ridiculous.

I always thought the bourbon bubble would eventually burst and people would lose interest but it seems that's far off if it ever does happen.

I have friends who do it with limited release beers. It's the same thing. They can up a small number and the value is built in to the demand.

I'm a big fan of 'buyer beware'. Do your homework. And if you have $285 to buy a tin of tobacco that may or may not be smokable, go for it and let the rest of us normal people know what comes of it.
Just realize that you might be considered either someone that doesn't know what to do with their money or someone that has their priorities out of whack. No big deal. Live your life.
It's the same with $100,000 cars. It's ok to buy one but you have to admit that you live in an alternate reality.
